Steering wheel freeplay.......

Steering wheel freeplay.......

Postby SleeperSolara » Tue May 23, 2006 10:49 am

Well i just got my alignment done on Friday, and all four tires were out of line bad. :-?
Well i had teh steering wheel straight and was just messin' around and noticed there was some freeplay of the steering wheel when you turn it left or right, before the tires actually move. My bro's rental car which is an 06 Nissan Altima doesn't have any free play.
And my moms 2001 Sienna doesn't have any free play.....
So what you guys think????

I thought maybe it had something to do with the stiffness (or softness) of the tire sidewalls.

I figure the altima might have stiffer sidewalls, but the Sienna, I doubt would have stiffer sidewalls.

Well just checked dads' 98 Camry and the steering wheel has no free play either.
And how would the sidewall affect the steering wheel.

The more sidewall you have, the further the steering would go, but that's not the case in testing play in a parked car since my landlord has an '89 Toyota Pickup that doesn't have abnormal play (neither does his '04 Tundra or '91 Accord), and the sidewalls for the Pickup must be about 3", so I don't see how it'll affect anything on a test, but it DOES affect handling.

Well it just the steerin' part.
It fine but i don't like the free-play on the steerin' wheel.
Cause if you want to change lanes fast all you would have to do is move the steerin' wheel alittle bit and the car would move but in my case you have to move the steerin' wheel alittle more to have th ecar react.
