Ground Control Coilovers + KYB GR-2 Shocks NOT FITTING %$#@!

Postby rezilient » Tue May 30, 2006 7:00 pm

Hi there. I am new to this board, seems like a great forum!

My mechanic just installed my ground control (sleeve) coilovers and KYB GR-2 shocks and something is obviously NOT RIGHT.

The car is set to the lowest setting (3" drop..) and its sitting higher than it was stock. The red coilover sleeve (with the threads) is sitting on a 'perch' instead of flush with the lower part of the shock (where the stock spring would normally rest).

Does anyone else have this set-up? OR is it that these are simply NOT compatible? OR maybe some modification is needed??

Here are some pics to help explain.

Something is obiously wrong, I believe GC Sleeves are meant to be used with Tokicos or Stock Struts, trust me I had them on my solara, err, I mean my friend did... If you go to their site from what I remember they say what struts to use. Where are you located? If you are in SoCal, I am willing to help you out. On the Struts when I had them on I had to pull this ring off the strut to get them to sit on the plate. But YES they are not sitting correct.

they arent bolted up correctly..

you put them even with the top of the strut didnt you..

you should pull off the ring (for the oem springs) and mount them where that is.. right now its sitting i would say 5-6" higher in location then where it SHOULD have been screwed in place..

pull off the wheel & use a compressor and lower that beeyatch...

i agree, something is wrong. but can i make these work with the KYB GR2s or should i try another combo? the KYBs are not listed on the GC site but they seem very similar in shape to stock.

if i go a different route, what should i keep on the car and what should i sell??

thanks.

strange.. to me they look inverted. The red housing should be sitting on that bottom plate, and that should solve your problem.

soo tempted to be mean but i know u need help....

yes you mounted them wrong... wher ehte plate is as you pointed out on your pic is where you should lower them to... its really that simple... here

you have two options... lower it to the point where it mounts with the plates or just above them.. or have them cut off and mount it even there...

either way i dunno who told ya to mount them that high...

Thanks for not being mean.

In order to lower the sleeve so that it sits directly on the shock plate, the shock needs to be trimmed or modified becaues the red "sleeve" did not go past this flange shown below...

My mechanic is a buddy of mine and doesn't know too much about these performance parts. But we will take another look this weekend and complete the job properly.

Thanks!!

wow i didnt even see that ring on the shock. i'd say cut it because the red sleeve needs to be sitting on the shock perch for oyu to be low. Get ready though, looks like having it done right will lower your car another 5-6 inches... the exact thing you were explaining before.
