Synthetic Oil

Synthetic Oil

Engine is at 48,000 miles and I was thinking about switching to synthetic for the next oil change. I've been using Mobil 1 5W-30 in my ford ranger for the past couple years. Any reasons why I should not switch to it in the solara as well. By the way, the engine is a 4-cylinder.

By all means, switch! It's never too late (although the later you switch, the fewer results you experience).

The only common misperception about switching to synthetic on a higher mileage vehicle is that it will 'cause' leaks... The fact of the matter is that the regular oil actually caused the leaks by not effectively lubricating the seals in the first place (along with standard ware and tear). The leaks arise when you change to synthetic because, due to the lack of impurities, it is more easily able to escape through smaller margins where standard oil could not.

Anyways, at 48k you shouldn't have any leaks to begin with, so you'll benefit greatly by using synthetic. It's more costly, but it's definitely worth the $.

Synthetic is the way to.

I personally use Redline. http://www.redlineoil.com/
But if you are happy with Mobil, stick with them. But you should definately switch.

my lara v6 SE is at 128,000 miles now, i switched to mobile 1 5w-30 at about 118,000 miles because i was afraid of sludge built up on the 97 to 2001 1mz engines.
i have changed oil twice, and i do see some dark spot on both sides of the front valve cover gasket area. it is not even a minor leak, just some brown oil now dryout by dust, but it is clearly visible, but i already anticipated it will have some sort of leak before i put the mobile 1 in.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll stick to Mobil 1. It has been great in my truck.

I use Mobil 1 on my 96 camry for both peace of mind and the flexibility of longer oil change intervals. I only change my oil over my summer and winter break from school. I like to know that if I need to go over the 3000 mile standard oil change interval, i safely can with synthetic
