My Solara's dead :(

Postby pythonjosh » Wed Jun 14, 2006 11:38 pm

So just as my car warmed up it died. Just as it got up to 60mph.
Timing is ok, plugs have spark, starter is ok. Only thing I can think of is a bad MAF sensor. My whole engine is stock. She turns over, just doesn't ignite. It has fuel also, I can smell it. Any ideas dear Solara gods?
I'm gonna do what I can do with no knowledge to the MAF sensor to see if it's a bad wire going to it, and see if there is a fuse for it. But after that I have clue how to procede.

The MAF sounds liek it may not be a bad call as far as the culprit goes, but the whole thing seems kind've mysterious, just shutting down. It's probably somehtign rather small, or at least lets hope that it is.

Could be the throttle body got flooded [with fuel] it happened with my friend's altima one time...but he would wait it out and it'd crank n' ignite fine.

But that wouldn't kill it while it was running.

when i opened up the air filter box it reeked of gas.
Why would the MAF stop the car from starting?

If it is a manual tranny, try to pop start it to see if it catches. If it doesnt catch or your an auto and you are mech inclined:
1. Pull an injector and have someone tap the ignition see if fuel is reaching the injectors.
2. Check all vacuum hoses and such.
3. Reset the ECU for a few minutes and see if that corrects or changes its behavior. If its a MAF problem, resetting the ECU would reset the signal and anything stored in the ECU s you might be able to start her and then the problem will come back.
4. Check all wiring to sensors like the MAF, O2, (not sure if these guys have a TPS), etc

All else fails, get ready to pay 75/hr.

What weird when you can smell gas from your airbox....
But the MAF reads the amount of air your enigne injests and calculates how much fuel to add.

It will fire and run(more like stumble and die)with the airbox off, so if it were the maf, it would still hit a little when starting. Did you get the codes out of the computer? If youve got fuel and spark it should be firing...unless it the timing belt jumped bad or something. Maybe a bad cam or crank sensor? I would do it like this 1. Check all obvious things like electrical and DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES. 2. Pull a spark plug see if its firing(ask if you dont know howto do im assuming you do) 3. Fuel pressure 4. If you have all these things and no codes...

5. Get a set of dummy lights and hook to injectors and have someone crank the car while you watch. The lightshould pulse similarly to an injector pulsing. This lets you know the ECM is working the injectors and that the problem is not sensor related, as im pretty sure if a main sensor goes out the emc cuts fuel.

6. If you do all that and nothing works...timing belt
or your crank melted LOL j/k

Also this info is as accurate as it can be considering i just slathered it all down in a hurry. Also i may be forgetting some things.
