Hi all:

I just recently got my 90K done plus an iridium upgrade and timing belt change as preventative maintenence, except I have a bunch of to-do's to be done (and I checked the easy stuff out and it seemed legit; the brake fluid was kinda dark and even affecting the performance a little, and the trans fluid is not of normal color). I need the following information for:

Valve adjustment (the most expensive)
Water pump
Idler bearing
Timing tensioner bearing
Transmission fluid flush (no longer the right color)
Brake fluid flush (checks out; it's black as fxck)

With that list given above, I know that the water pump, idler and tensioner can be done within the same step since they are all closely related to the timing belt as a fact. However, I need some info for each incident:

1. How hard is it to DIY for someone with a modest mechanical knowledge to do any of the above? I'm no n00b but certainly not an expert either
2. If so, is there a better tutorial on this site than what's offered in the Haynes Manual?
3. Any commonly known issues (e.g. TSB, this might snap if not careful, etc)?
4. If you work as or for a mechanic/live around SoCal and know how, what price/offer can you offer?
5. Does anybody have any part numbers for what I need?

Sorry if I'm asking a ton of questions, but I'm broke and I'm trying to weigh my options because I SERIOUSLY can't afford $1,500.

i had my clutched changed 2 years ago... about 600 bucks.... my ex worked at toyota at the time. i guess it was reasonable... except they had the car for about 2 weeks and when i got it back the tranny fluid was leaking everywhere! they fixed it all. no charge of course.

Sweetie, did they tell you what caused the leaky gear oil? Ill bet one of the axles popped out of the transmission. That happened to me the first time i put a clutch in my solara.

not that i can remember. i remember i picked the car up from the dealers... the mechanics worked on my car on their free time, or at night, which is why i didnt get the real dealer price on the new clutch. but i drove home. and about 5 min. later, my bro comes in telling me that my trans. fluid was leaking. and i didn't believe him. so he told me to touch it & smell it. and sure enough. it was. so i called my bf at the time. and another friend and the mechanic came down with a bottle of trans. fluid and took the car back.
i cant remember what he said it was. it had to do with something that doesnt really need replacing, but because all the other parts are new... it should be replaced. i cant remember!! sorry!! but i dunno about the axle popping out... b/c i was able to drive it from corona to fontana.... if you not from so cal. its about a 20 min drive.

Daaaaaaaaaamn... All the way from Arkansas just to work on the car of a shmuck like me? You must REALLY, as you said, have nothing better to do. Just kidding; thanks for the offer, I appreciate it! If you actually do, how much?

You don't have to include the brake flush; some guy literally didn't look while making a right and the ABS punched in kinda weird when I slammed on the brakes, so I'm gonna take it to another hook-up.
