New Convertible Owner

I'm over 50 and have a 06 converitble too. I've never thought of the Solara as being a chick's car. If your happy with it, don't worry what others say. There a lot of guys on this forum that I bet don't think of their cars as too "girly". Happy top down motoring and welcome.

I don't think of it as a "chick's car" -- at least it looks nothing like one.

But for some reason chicks are drawn to buy them. As a driver, you tend to notice who is driving the same model as you, and around this area, the majority I've seen are women - especially in the convertibles.

No idea why.

I've always noticed Eclipses to be that way too, but I don't see why they'd be a "chick's car" either..

Hey, women have a track record of knowing good style, so perhaps it's a good thing.

Thanks to all for the great welcome. My A/C needs a new condensor - one of the welds had split, and the refrigerant leaked out. Hopefully I will get it back tomorrow - have a Highlander loaner till then. I've purchased and installed the front license plate bracket from Toyota. It looks much better that the way it was delivered with the front plate in a plastic advertising frame screwed directly to the bumper. It's hard to beleive that neither Toyota nor the dealer would spring for this $11 part. Thanks again.

and i also never thought of it as a "girls car" either... to me it was always a granny car! no offense. but i've grown to appreciate it for what it is.

good luck with the a/c... i never use mine if im alone... which is why i wish i had a convertible. i always roll with my windows down

I'm a 60 year old kid from southern New Jersey who purchased a new SLE convertible ten days ago. I was happy to find a web site that was named "Solara Guy" because everyone has been busting me about buying a "girls car". I've owned 3 Vettes, a GTO, etc. over the years, but decided that comfort and room for the grandkids was more of a priority now. I got the car home and the A/C wasn't working. It's going back for repair tomorrow. Other than that, it's great so far.

The Vettes and the GTO were a long time ago. No modifications are planned for the Solara - too old and too lazy to lay on the ground to do stuff. I did install a front license plate bracket - does that count? (lol) Maybe I'll attempt to do an ipod connection. Thanks for the greeting.

Damn - I forgot you posted that and was just thinking the other day while I was creeping along at 5mph inside my gated complex, how stupid it was that we had this limiter on the top, and that I should look up that mod to disable it!

Really isn't an issue, because you can't "accidentally" open the top if it's clamped down, and you'd really notice the noise and flapping if you started to close it while driving faster.

I wish there was a mod for the damn windows now!! (All Up/Down with one-touch!)

Is there any way to just make it 20mph instead of fully removing it?

That speed detector mod for the top looks easy, but more important to me would be an easy way to hide a radar detector wire and have it go on and off with the ignition. I don't like the visable dangling wire to the 12v outlet. I've done it on previous cars by putting the detector on the visor and running the cord under the headliner to the side trim of the windshield. Now that I have a rag top, I keep it on the dash. Any ideas?
