Steam out of the engine and inability to start again is probably a coolant system failure. (steam is evaporated coolant escaping the radiation and water circulation system in the form of steam. If coolant escapes, and the coolant system isnt pressurized, the engine does not allow itself to start as a safety mechanism.) Could be a water pump failure, could be a leak, could be more.
You said transmission fluid was all over the place...are you sure it was transmission fluid and not coolant? You didnt indicate that they did any transmission work.
