Brake light indicator scare.

Brake light indicator scare.

Hey guys,

I was thinking about taking this to Toyota, but I thought I would ask you guys first since everyone seems to be so knowledgable.

OK...here i go...

Every once in awhile, the brake light indicator in the dash lights up, but I don't know why. When it first happened, I had thought that one of the bulbs had gone out, but when I went to check the brake lights, they were all working. I checked the lights both with and without someone stepping on the brake. Then I figured that maybe one of the bulbs had gotten loose or something, but I don't know if that makes any sense, so I didn't even check.

Brake Light

Postby Guest » Thu Mar 13, 2003 2:55 pm

Hey DavPak

Thanks for that reference, but I think the light I am refering to is different from the brake light. It's the little picture of the car with the back lights flashing. I'm pretty sure that it is not the parking brake indicator.

But the responses that people posted to that previous post brought up good points that might relate to my problem. I will go ahead and check my brake pads and the brake fluid just in case.

Thanks DavPak

I had a similiar problem...it turned out that the light wattage in my spoiler light wasnt enough so the sensor read it as out and the indicator was lit. I just ended up puttin in a higher wattage bulb...my advice too would be to replace it.

i actually am pretty sure i know what the problem is...in my case the "tail light out idicator" was intermittently (sp?) coming on....so i tested the bulbs and brakes and found that the left tailight brake bulb was not functioning correctly...it would light up at night when the headlights were on but wouldnt glow brighter to indicate that you are braking...just go ahead and replace the bulbs and you shouldnt see that problem occur again...hope this helps...L8r moe :evilbat:

Your brake fluid is low. And it would probably be best to check SEARCH next time. :) Dot 3 is what you need.

Okay, that's called the Bulb Malfunction indicator light...not BRAKE light as explained earlier. ;)

hey guys, i was reading through these posts and i have have the same issue with the "brake light INDICATOR' (not the parking brake indicator). it came on a few weeks ago and went away, but now it seems to be there for good. it could jsut be the filament reconnecting and disconnecting, so i guess the bulb needs to be replaced. anyways, how hard is it to replace that bulb? keep in mind i dont know jack-squat about replacing lights or fixing anything in an engine, etc etc.

Light indicator

Postby SilverBillet » Fri Jun 13, 2003 12:12 am

Hi,

I'm new to this site, I recently changed my left rear brakelight. I noticed the same orange indicator light on and checked my brake lights. It was working fine with the lights on, but when I stepped on the brakes the brake light did not get brighter on the left side. The bulb is a dual filament bulb, so the higher wattage one must have given out.

I opened the access to the rear lights which is really easy, you don't even need a screwdriver, you can just do it by hand. To my surprise the bulb was clear, I'd figured red bulbs. I bought a replacement 3157 clear light and since the rear turn signal lights are the same type 3157, I played around with the lights. With the orange light bulbs in the brake light housing, it lights up the same as the clear, so I switched the two lights around. Now I have clear turn signal lights, which looks nice and in the daytime you don't see that orange look in the clear light housing.

haha sorry silver, but i copied your idea :D now i have the same thing, clear turn lights. i can get a ticket for it probably, but i doubt a cop will care. im guessing its gonna look sweet at night (installed it in the daytime so i havent seen it yet). come to think of it, this is the first thing ive ever done to my car by myself, aside from filling the gas, lol, pretty sad huh?

Interesting... I just got the same problem last week.

I checked my hazard, brake +spoiler LED, and reverse lights, they were all working properly.
