Dumb Question - Manual Transmission Oil 1MZ

Postby boiphil » Mon Jul 10, 2006 10:08 am

I'm attempting to replace the manual transmission oil in my Solara (1MZ engine). I can't seem to find any information on which bolt is the drain and fill plug. I also can't seem to find any repair manuals (Hayes or Chilton) at any local store (and I seem to remember I should be looking for a Camry/ES300/Solara book)

Can anyone point me in the direction of the right bolts?

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks to be a large bolt on the back-side, and I've had a friend confirm it. I'll take some pictures while I'm under for the benefit or anyone else.

I’m going to use the book-spec 75W90 for my area, ol’Canada does get a little cold time to time, if I use too heavy a weight it’ll be like getting molasses in there. (even the 75W90’s looking pretty thick)

I thought the transmission was smooth before, I put in Royal Purple MaxGear 75w90 and it's incredible. I'm shocked there was any difference, but there's definitely enough to notice.

On a side-note anyone attempting to do this themself, you'll definitely want a gear-oil pump (basically sucks oil into a chamber from the bottle, then allows you to force it back out of the chamber via tube to the transmission) not a whole lot of room to manoveour a bottle to squirt the oil into the tranny again.

Yes those are boobies. Nice ones at that.

Anyway, i think ill have to try the royal purple gear oil, how much did it cost a bottle, and how many did you need?

I'm stuck up in Canada, the Royal Purple cost $12.65/quart and the car is supposed to take just over 4 (4.2quarts i think), however I measured what I got out and it was just under 4 (3.9). There was also no way I could get any more than 3.9 back in, I wore the last 1/10th of a quart as it came spurting back out, Royal Purple definitely don't taste like candy.

I pull the fill plug, then also the vent on the top of the tranny... then fill through the top of the tranny till it comes out the fill hole :drinking:
