Correct Tire Pressure

Correct Tire Pressure

Postby beloved » Thu Jul 20, 2006 9:57 am

I need the correct tire pressure for over-sized rims. Am I supposed to use the same tire pressure as the stock wheels? My car has 245/40/18 on it now. I bought the car this way two weeks ago, chrome wheels and body kit. That's why I'm clueless on this. Thanks in advance.

the max psi is stamped on the tire.

look for it.

failing to do so can result in damage.

Wait, what do you mean by that? Just don't go above it? Or should it be at it? The stock 16's say 44 is the max, but the manual says to keep it at 32.
This is the space where I should write something witty or clever, hoping to show some personality.

Max Psi is the max a tire is designed to take, not what you should inflate to.

I've aksed this before, and I think the consensus was to add 2-3PSI for each plus size.

i.e. For stock 15s, its 29PSI, for stock 16s, its 32psi, for 17s, 34-35psi, and for 18s, 36-38psi. These are all cold inflation temperatures.

Just make sure NOT to exceed the max on the side of the tire, but I dont think any tire has a max PSI number that low anyways.

From memory:

Too little pressure = more contact patch, better dry traction, worse MPG, and for low profile tires, more risk of rim damage.

Too much pressure = less contact patch = worse dry traction, better MPG.

Too much or too little can lower your wet and snow traction, depending on the shape of the treads. Too much or too little will also increase the risk of tire blowout (Need to be around 30% over/under to be significantly higher risk).

I keep my 16" winter wheels at 32 psi and 18" summer wheels at 35 psi.

each tire varies.

my s-03's had a max psi of 51.

just dont go above the max psi.

i kept mine at 48 psi, but again each tire is different.
