I did about 6 on mine, you should be fine with inspections. I messed mine up with the clear coat or something but oh well. It was only a $150 project.

$150?????
I did mine for less than $25....$15 for vht niteshades,$4 for clear and $3 for a pack of sand paper, and a couple of hours of my time (free).

blakey2007,I put on about 5-6 coats and then 2 coats of clear and I have passed inspection since I did it.

I'm new to this forum, so i am still learning how to obtain information. I am also interested in obtaining info as to how to go about smoking my tailights also. I think that my car will really stand out with the factory Diamond White Pearl paint. Who would be willing to help me out with this?

Grab a can of VHT Nite Shades, take off your tails, clean them real well, then have at it... remember to clear coat it too...

Look in this thread for some making it look nicer after you clear coat it...

Well I bought the gen 1 tail lights so that was around $70 then two cans of VHT $30, clear $5, Painters tape $4, various sand paper $10, pizza for my buddy and I while doing the project $20 and Meguiars scratch remover $7. The initial VHT process was great it turned out wonderful, it was when I went to clear coat it something happened and it got all foggy. I tried to sand it and then use the scratch remover and nothing. So I'm going to eventually try the project again. What clear did you use? I bought Krylon.

Oh ok, I thought you spent $150 on just smoking the lights,I didn't know you bought new tails. I don't remember what brand the clear was (I think it may have been duplicolor) but I found it in autozone and it was with the rest of the paints & supplies. The can said something about matches OEM clear perfectly. Since I smoked them I have been waxing them along with the rest of the car when I wax it, and I haven't had a need for the scratch remover.

You passed inspection huh? Which one did you go to?

I almost got failed for having blue-coated silverstar corners when I went, but that was almost 3 years ago at the Wayne DMV.

I smoked my spare set with VHT nightshades too, but it came out kind of purply for some reason. To top it off, the clear coat got messed up. (It was smooth in some places, and blotchy in others.) I tried to polish it down, and it wouldnt work so I never put them on. I should try to buff it out to see how it looks.

How exactly do you tint the tailights, i see all the pictures and they all look great.. I have a 99 black SE V6 5-speed and i want to smoke the tailights to match the paint, Do you spray the VHT on the outside of the tailights or do you disassemble the taillight and spray inside lense?
