"normal" rmp range

"normal" rmp range

Postby Missay » Fri Mar 21, 2003 11:12 pm

i'm just curious what most solaras rev at when you first start the car?

when i start the car it revs at like 2-2.5rmps. isn't that a little high? my father..aka. "mr. know it all" is too funny. he walked me out to my car the other day and was all shocked when he heard it running like "omg..since when has your car sounded that loud! why didn't you mention anythign to me!"
HELLO! how long have i been saying that it sounds horrible! lol

*when the car idles after starting it's like 2.2rmps.
*if i put my foot on the brake and put it into gear it drastically drops to like .9 or 1.2rmps.
*if i put it back in park it shoot up to the 2rmp range.
*when i punched the gas in park (rmps went to like 6 or 7) then took my foot off the brake, the rmps went a little lower, but still stayed at like 1.5.
*at red lights the rmps are basically normal at .9-1.4ish give or take.

yea ur idle is probably holding a bit high.....but if ur car is cold when u check ur rpm's its gonna be high. after you drive ur car around and know its fully warmed up through it in park and see what the rpms are at. Also if u put it in drive and ur rps are normal then i don't think that is ur problem of poor gas mileage.....i still think its something else and u really need to get taht fixed because u've had that problem for a while!!

good luck

I think the "normal" idle when u strat your car in when the engine is cold is around 1600- 1900, it should not go higher than that. There is a way on adjusting the idle but not sure exactly how though...

man i was pissed yesterday when i only got 383 miles on the tank! i cursed the oxygenated winter gas we're still getting!

missay, your idle sounds high, maybe you're having temp sensor issues. the car should idle high in colder weather so that the car warms up quicker, all toyotas (well, newer ones at least) do this. same thing with overdrive, it won't shift into overdrive unless the car is warm enough. in this way, the car warms itself up quicker. but once its warm, the idle should be back to normal.

Missay,

Your idle is definately too high. Even on the coldest days my car idles at 1800rpm, and when i put it into reverse or drive it goes down to like 1000. Once it gets warmed up it should idle at 600 or so. As for the gas mileage, that is very low but it takes you 3 weeks to go through a tank still right? The winter has killed my gas mileage, its down at like 17mpg and i go through a tank a week.

My idle is like Yanks0114,

around 1600-1800 when cold, and progressively goes down.
Usually around 300-320 miles for full tank.

normal idle on autos is 750 (from what I remember from automotive class :D )

I think there is an idle adjustment screw in the engine bay... where on the solara, i have no idea (unless it's electronic now) and you can adjust the idle rpm (recommended to be done when it's warmed up at operating temp) but that milage... 0_0

Mine idles around 1600-1700 when it's cold, but after it's warmed up it idles just below 700 rpm.

130 miles from a full tank? Something is definitely wrong. Assuming you're using around 16 gallons, that's just over 8 miles per gallon. At today's gas prices, that's got to hurt.

:o ouch! dont do that, youre going to kill her!

anyways, on a really cold day the RPM's will hit 2000, but I've never seen it go over (even in REALLY cold weather)
If it actually idles at 2500 somethings definitely wrong!

Next time you go somewhere, check what your car is idling at just before you turn off the car (while in park), after the engine is nice and warm. It should be between 6 and 7 hundred.

How cold is it outside when you tested it Missay? I know when its cold here < 50 F hehe> when i start it up the RPMS avg about 2200 for only mebbe 30 seconds then they drop to like 1800 and then to an eventuall 800 when the car is warmed up... seems pretty normal. as for the idle screw... i would imagine its electronic now????

The idle screw is still manual as far as i know. You have to sometimes adjust it when installing the supercharger. Your idle is pretty high too. By cold we are talking about anywhere from 0-20 degrees F

I've had my Camry Idle that high too..its just the cold weather...When the engine is cold or been sitting for a while. regarding milage, i think 130 is BAD! Worst i've had was 180 with FULL CITY stop&Go driving! What RPM's are you at Missay when your engine is warmed up?
