Uhh Volt meter help?

Hehe Its weird how you know about your car but all the sudden you dont know what your doing. I have a volt meter with 3 wires coming out. Red is positive, Black is Negative. For some reason the purple is suppose to be the on off switch that taps into the Cigarette lighter plug or something. Well plugging the red and black in it turns on........Without even plugging the purple wire... So after knowledge and all, I feel stupid to ask.. What the heck is the purple wire again?

Red provides constant 12v, black is constant ground

If you didn't hook up the purple, it'd still work, however it'd probally be on all the time.

If you hook up the purple to something that isn't always hot (like the cigarette lighter), the gauge can figure out when its supposed to be on and when it should shut off

what kind of gauge is it..???

The purple wire on my gauge was the dimmer wire.

Since my gauges were ghost face and when i turn on the car the gauge lites up really bright for day time use. but during the night it would be way to bright. I connected the purple wire to my dimmer switch so that now when i turn on my lights the gauge will dim. its kinda of like the clock on the center console. if will dim when you turn on your lights...

hope that helps..

Also make sure that the 12 v you pluged into isn't a 12 v that stays on when you ahve the keys out. You have to use a 12 v wire that will only turn on when you have your keys in the ignition.
