Tire size question

Tire size question

Postby josho » Mon Aug 28, 2006 4:36 pm

Hi all and thank you in advance,

I just picked up a 2001 sle v6 all stock and it needs tires right away. It's on stock 16's. I want to do a +0 size but I've seen some different sizes on people's rides here so I thought I'd see which gives the best result. It has 205/60/16 on it now. I was looking at 215/55/16 but I saw that somebody else had 215/60/16 which I'd think would make it stand taller. Am I correct in thinking that a 215/55/16 will keep the same overall diameter as what's on it now?

Cheers,

Josh

PS. I'll get to the intro Post when I get some pics...

The widest while still the most accurate would be a 225/55 16. I suggest getting the Yokohama Avid H4's nomatter if you stay stock or go wider. Great all season high performance tire. After 12k my tread still looks new. Jon.

I'd never thought of 225/55/16, those will fit on my stock wheels? There are tons of choices in 225/55/16.

Those Yokahama's look pretty sweet and the price is great. What size do you have these in? Do you have any pics?

I was going to go with the fuzion's since I had great luck with them on my last car. I've also used Yokohama in the past on a 98 v6 camry that I had and thought that the tread wore kind of fast, but I drove different then also  .

tires

Postby Sentinel » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:22 pm

I have 215/55-16 on stock rims, lowered with eibach springs.

the tire guy I talked to about this said that he thought 225's wouldn't work.

Being lowered: next time I may try 215/60-16 to get a bit more ground clearance, as 215/55 are a tiny bit smaller (diameter) and 215/60 are a tiny bit larger than the stock 205/60.

I saw 215/60-16 on a 'Lara, but it wasn't lowered, and I don't know if there would be any rubbing issues; however, I don;t think there would be, with all the guys running 225s and 235s.

225 is the max you can go on a 6" wheel, yours might be wider so you'll be just fine. I'm running 225/40 18's for summer and will be running 225/55 16 for winter. The pics I have show rims/tires. I was so impressed I bought these for 3 other cars in the family ranging from 14"-15" Unless Yokohama stopped making these I wouldn't go with any other tire. I've owned many tires over time and I think these are the best I've ever had including tires from Michelin, Pirelli, etc. Second would be the Pirelli P7000 Super Sports I had in the same size but they discontinued them. Good luck in your choice. Jon.

Just as an FYI: Thinner (Less wide) tires are better for snow, mud, and rain, and wider tires are better for dry. The wider the tire, the harder it is for the tires to "plow" through the elements.

In my opinion there really is no point to go wider on stock rims. Just stick with the specs, since its not worth the headache of figuring it out, making sure you dont rub, making sure you stay within the stock diameter for the gearing and speedometer, and paying more for tires in the long run.

I run 225/40s on my Summer 18s and will be running 205/65s (stock tire dimensions) on my winter 15s.

If you really want to, 225 should be fine for the 16s, just be sure to stay within +-2 to 3% of the stock combined wheel/tire diameter or your speedometer and gearing will be off too much.
