OK, after some research, I am fairly confident that in the future I would only try something like a 3MZ with 1MZ Heads, IM, TB and sensors.
If I am correct, the 3MZ has VVTi and DBW, and not knowing Toyota's, I'd be more inclined to just get the bottom end from a 3MZ and swap all the 1MZ stuff onto it. Of course, I'd only do this if my car needed a new motor, and I realize that the power gains would only be slight.
The 3MZ and 2GR would bolt in and all, but being that you would need to keep VVTi working to get best performance, you'd likely be stuck trying to get DBW working correctly too. And, if I remember correctly, DBW is a chassis related system....requiring input from ABS and DSC to fully function. So, yeah...just thinking out loud here. Following some of the good advice from board members here, I saw the MR2 guys have tackled these issues...and it's a tough job.
So, my conclusion is that a 3MZ block would be nice for the added displacement if in the future you needed a newer low end. But as far as performance oriented swaps go, it's tough to play around with the 'yotas. damm....
