Anyone tint Gen1 Foglights with film?

Postby Jon11582 » Tue Sep 19, 2006 2:41 pm

I've been trying to tint my Gen1 fogs with film. For the life of me, I cant get the tint to go on straight without creasing. Now it is a bit curved in both directions, but I can't tell if too curved so its impossible to tint without creases, or if I just suck at applying tint. Ive tried about 5 times before I gave up.

Anyone able to tint Gen1 fogs sucessfully? If so, any tips?

I hope you are not tinting them on the car and are removing the fog housings from the bumper. (i admit i have not tinted solara fog's but i've helped friends in new delhi fog up their headlights in the winter months).

Maybe I'll just spray tint it...

I just read this. The secrets in the thread:

thealkimo wrote:since i applied the film on the outside, the process is pretty straightforward with the tinting film, just follow the directions on the back of the package. however for the fogs, you can't use one piece of film to cover the entire surface because it will cause crinkling since the foglight itself is curved. so i used three equal pieces of film per foglight and just trimmed and lined up the pieces so that there was no overlapping film.

for the turn indicators in the taillights, you just need to cut out a piece that will cover the desired area plus some extra on the edges and then lay it down and very carefully trim to size using an x-acto blade.

the whole process, after some troubleshooting only took about an hour. actually the hardest part was probably just removing the foglights and tail lamps.

I didnt think it was possible, but I never tinted anything before so I just wasnt aware if it was because I'm a noob tinter. This confirms that its not just me, but its the shape that makes it impossible.

I'm going to give this another shot soon.

If this is anything like window tint, you might want to try:

BEFORE removing the film, THOROUGHLY clean the fog light, then take a mixture of baby soap and water (Film Aid, sold at auto parts stores, works good too), then spray it on the fog light. Then while it's "bonded" on the surface with the mixture, heat it with a heat gun so that it starts to wrap around, then clean it off.

Spray a generous amount of solution on, then, since it's a smaller surface, place the film without the backing on, then squeegee the mixture from top to bottom with a credit card wrapped in an old T-shirt. Also, be careful to also apply a smaller, but generous amount to the backing so that the film doesn't stick to itself.

If it's not like window tint, my legal disclaimer: I didn't say that :D!
