Nissan spent alot of time and money developing the sound of those cars. I believe the basic hardware you would need to even come close would be true dual from the headers to a H or X pipe, dual cats, dual resonators and dual mufflers. Oh yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have a VQ35DE under your hood either. You'd spend alot of money and time swapping exhaust parts to try and get that sound. Then your car would technically be heavier...and there is no guarantee that our 1MZ could ever make those sounds anyway. The design of the engine and its operating characteristics have alot to do with the final sound also.

I'm not certain why we'd need to go to true dual to sound like a 350z considering that the 350z doesn't even have true dual exhaust. It is a split tip with a relatively large single pipe running from the headers. I think the main pipe is a 2.5 inch pipe (Track & Grand Touring) and 2.25 (for all other). As far as sounding like the 350z I just don't see how it could happen because they are 2 entirely different cylinder heads, displacements, exhaust manifold runner lengths, and resonator/muffler sizes. I would agree also that Nissan spent a lot of time getting the sound of that exhaust just right to add to the all around "on the edge" driving experience that the Z has to offer.
I would say from experiencing dropping the resonators on my '95 Mustang made a huge difference in the overall volume. It seems to me that the large size of our mufflers has a lot to do with our subdued sound as well. I would say get larger diameter pipe as well but that may possibly upset the back pressure which may reduce torque with little to no gains in HP if your not careful.
