Hey guys.. i havent signed into the forum in a while.. and so my account got deleted. But.. urgent matters brings me back..

I recently let my brother borrow my car, 1999 1mzfe 5-speed, and the clutch decided to give out on him. We got it towed to a nearby mechanic and they just called us today with a quote.. $350 for parts + $600ish for labor. To me this sounds a LOT ridiculous.. am i wrong? should i ask for a lower price or will i just have better luck going someplace else?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

$400 labor is what you should look to pay.

im currently at.. 136xxx. Im thinking i'll just get that exedy clutch off ebay (the one that lazyboy posted about) and just pay for the labor.

Car's been real good to me.. the clutch just happened to give out on me at the wronggg time.. (unemployed for going on two months now..) Now im worried about my timing belt.. still on original.

But thanks for the quick replies!

What will you do if the ebay clutch goes out? You will have no customer support, no warranty, no peace of mind. DO NOT buy something as essential as a clutch off of ebay, unless you know the seller is reputable and stands behind his products!

clutch price

Postby Sentinel » Mon Sep 18, 2006 6:25 pm

A clutch is a repair that a mchanic should be able to give you a price on, w/o looking at the car.

the reason you're getting screwed is b/c you TOWED your car to the mechanic. Are you going to pay for another tow, or are you going to have him do the work?

Kinda like popcorn @ the theatre. Where else are you gonna go?

the excedy clutch is awesome, for that price as well, I paid someone to do mine, it was liek 200 bucks for labor, but it was my dad's friend, and he's not a mechanic, i'm just not strong enough to losin the bolts... actually i'm just lazy.... you can do it yourself but its going to take you awhile probably three days of work, but since your don't work no more you menus well do it yourself, and save some MAD MONEY doing it yourself 150 plus tools, doing it at the shop, 950! well its gonna probably cost you about 150 plus tranmission fluid, i went expensive, REDLINE 50 bucks, for 950 he better get you a new flywheel as well.... when i changed my clutch, i didn't drop my trans, just pushed it to the side.took out the clutch, and placed the new one.

Yea I think I found someone to do it for $750 when my Mustang's went out. This is a front wheel drive car. You have to consider the fact they will be dropping the suspension/half shafts to get the tranny out of the way.
