Battery Corrosion

Battery Corrosion

Postby Island Solara » Mon Oct 09, 2006 2:44 pm

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and still getting the hang of it. I'm not sure if my problem has already been covered. I tried searching, but got frustrated.

Here's my problem......my batttery terminals are corroded! I was about to take my battery off to try and clean the terminals as well as the battery posts. However, the nut that tightens to hold the terminal is corroded itself. Has anyone had this problem? If you did, what'd you do? I mean, I can probably bring it to a Toyota dealership and have them change it, but they'll most likely charge a bunch (probably my last resort).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Would you suggest I get a new battery? I'm thinking that's where the corrosion started. It looked like it started under on of the sticker thingys on top of the battery and just moved from there.

a simple kitchen ingredient takes that stuff right off...

baking soda and water.

mix the two in warm water, pour it on the battery terminal or where ever you see corrosion, and brush it off.

Yeah, works great if you can actually immerse the connectors in the solution. Stuff will actually "sizzle" the corrosion off. Once the connectors and battery posts are clean, rinsed and dried, apply some petroleum jelly to prevent it from coming back.
