Solara in winter...?

Solara in winter...?

Postby 00seV6man » Tue Oct 17, 2006 11:54 pm

Hi guys,

My Solara is just over a month old so this will be my first winter with a Toyota. Does this car handle well on snowy/icy roads? Are winter tires a MUST? They really helped alot on my old Honda but that thing was terrible in the snow!
This probably doesn't apply to you lucky bastards living way down south but then again, any input will be appreciated.

thanks.

I already went through my first winter in the Solara (super blizzard we got hit with in the NYC area, 25.4 inches), banged up one of my wheels pretty bad. Driving out of a parking lot, I make a right turn, the car glided right into the parking lot curb. Maybe my tires weren't good enough, but before its starts snowing, I'm definitely changing my tires. But what car is gonna any good in more then 2 feet of snow, I can barely walk through that, and I'm the size of a polar bear lol.

Then again, my previous vehicle was a Ford Explorer 4X4....I guess I was spoiled in the winter with that truck.

I think it handles pretty well, and being a standard it will be that much better.

Definitly go for winter tires, many people have said it before: the cheapest winter tires and better than really good all seasons.

But I guess if you've got good insurance and dont really care, then just keep the all seasons on.

You're a Canadian and you ignore if winter tires is a must ???? HUH ???

4 seasons tires is surely not made for Canadian winters !!! Don't play with your life to save few bucks ! It made all the difference !

My '04 does acceptably with all-season tires... (Potenza RE-92)

HOWEVER, when I am making the trip up into Ontario and the weather is getting "IFFY", I will be taking my Toyota 4x4...

I'd stick with Sebas' recommendation on this one, even though I don't switch my tires... I DO use the all-season for rain and when I get caught in weather, but I also have a TRUCK for the nasty stuff and whenever I get a good read on the weather before heading north...

(It get's similarly bad down here in Ohio, just not as early and LOOOOOONG as it does in Ontario, etc... Also, the Dufferin county "high-lands" area gets REALLY nasty when the wind starts to blow, ay?)

My Solara handles GREAT in the winter. In fact, it handles the same as it does in the summer! LOL

Thanks for the input guys... I dont feel to confident with these Michelin MXV4's... they slip alot in rain so they're probably like skates in the snow.
Anyways, I'll be on the lookout for a pair of winter tires!

where many hate, few will love,
But for those who love,
they'll see what it's like to live.

I live were we get alot snow and having a fwd car is good in general. Driving a rwd sports car worked but a fwd is 10times better. My stock tires are all season tires. So they work for the snow. Obviously snow tires would perform better. But when it snows out you will be driving slow and cautious anyway. So my opinion is its not really going to make a big difference between all seasons and winter tires. You should be fine.

At least get a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks for the front wheels...that is what I did and just have all seasons on the rears for my winter wheels. This will get the job done if you're on a tight budget.
99 DWP SEV6 5spd 6.5psi+Meth, Tein+Tokico, EricSol+Brembos+EBC, OBX Headers+OBX 3" Exhaust, Supra MAF & 330cc, Spec 2+, Fidanza, TRD lip kit, Injen+Ext, Optima Red, Infinity 60.5+693.7i, 2 Kappa Perfect 12 VQ's+iPod+JVC DVD...etc

get some winters....even the cheapest winters you can buy will be better in the snow than the best all-seasons...and get 4...otherwise chances are you'll fishtail if snow stays on the ground

and crisponse -> if you lived up here, your re92s will not work at all....haha.....I tried it back in the day when my 17s didnt' have winter tires and they were actual summer wheels with the re92s....slid through a stop sign, turned around and went home.
