EGR

Well, I got a cel so I got it scanned, and it said that my EGR valve was misfunctioning. The only thing I know about this is it has something to do with emissions. Toyota wants 213 for the part and 150 for the install. Does anyone has any input on this. Thanks,

Ross

try and see if you have any pinched or clogged hoses, you can clean out your EGR valve yourself. If that doesn't work buy the EGR valve and install it yourself. The CEL comes on either cuz the valve is stuck open or closed from excess carbon build up. It's an emissions thing.

I had this problem twice in my old gen1 Solara, the first time at 55,000 miles I had Toyota clean out the system and change the valve, they charged me $260 and they said I also needed my fuel injection cleaned, lol for another $110. I cleaned my fuel injection myself but at 74,000 miles I get the same CEL for the EGR, I ended up selling the car without getting it fixed.

try to use seafoam first. search on internet for seafoam and EGR, you will find tons of examples

nope.

all you need is a resistor to trick the ECU into getting a false (and always perfect) CEL temp sensor reading.

one less thing to worry about on the long road to top performance ;)

if you get odb 2 codes such like P0402, chances are, the ecu complain about egr, if you have a V6 which is located right after the throttle body, on the plunem intake, 5 of 10mm screws to hold it. probably take around 10 or 20 minutes of labor, egr valve cost around $160 to $180 at online toyota dealer and two gaskets less than $2., but if dealer charge $150 for labor, probably it is over priced unless they performing other preventive maintainance also.
