Very bad day

Very bad day

Postby briantek » Sun Dec 03, 2006 3:45 pm

A couple of days ago I was driving under some pretty bad conditions. There was ice on the road everywhere and I was making a turn going very slow (10-15 mph) and my car lost control and fishtailed. The rear passenger wheel ended up hitting a curb at that speed, which finally stopped me. Well I immediately got out and looked to see what the damage was. And to my surprise I didn't see anything, but the car made a very loud noise when it hit. So I got back in the car and started driving again. After I got up to about 30-40mph things didn't seem right. I heard a strange vibrating noise back there and whenever I hit ice or snow at that speed the car almost seems like its being pushed to one side. If I go any faster I would surely lose control. So I took it to tires plus and had them look at it. They told me I needed an alignment to fix the traction and my rear hub assembly would need to be replaced (they said a bearing was broken) to fix the noise. They also said if I didn't got the hub assembly fixed soon my wheel could fall off. So I've paid 60 bucks for an alignment and will need to pay around 300 for the rear hub to be replaced. So far the car seemed to be better with handling but I just need to get the noise taken care of. Do you guys know any way I can maybe fix the bearing myself? Also the guy said there are two rear hub assemblies, one is for ABS and one is not. I'm pretty sure I don't have ABS? Anyway it's been a crappy couple of days. I can't stand living out here, esspecially when I feel like I'm just throwing away money. I'll be moving to california in Feburary, can't wait.

Unfortunately, I think a Hub is a one-piece deal. IF you have a Four-Disc/Rotor, then you'll surely have ABS plus your front dash console should have an ABS indicator on there. If the car has front Disc/rotor rear/Drums, then there's no ABS. Generally, almost all V6 SE and SLEs come with ABS. Only probably a rare few I4(5SFE/2AZFE) have ABS brake packages installed. I'm not a mechanical expert but thats my 2cents. Plus its UNSAFE to drive an unstable vehicle be careful.

I beg to differ. My stepmom's Gen4 had ABS on a front disk/rear drum car, but then again most cars with that configuration is more likely to have just the 2 front wheels. Either way, you definitely shouldn't drive around if it is the bearings. Sorry that happened; glad to hear that you're OK.

That sucks man.
Yeah if you dont' know if you have ABS or not, check in the engine bay, and look on the left side and if you see a silver box wit black tubes/wires runnin' out of it, then you have ABS.
Good luck man.

If you have a V6, then you WILL have ABS... says so in the brochure... but also what Sleeper Solara said...

I just replaced 2 bearings, the rear and the front. 300 is a great price since I replaced my rear bearing myself and price for the bearing/unit alone cost me 280 from the dealer. The front has to be pressed out, you cannot do it yourself. The rear is non-servicable, so the entire unit must be replaced.
