i think my starter went out...v.2.0

so before i post this, i did use the search engine and nothing came up that was helpful.

so monday morning, as i'm already running late for school (as always) i go to start up my car ('01, 5f, i4 manual for those that don't already know) and it doesn't start. it doesn't even turn, or click. at first, i thought it was the battery, even though i just got a new one less then 4 months ago.

so far all signs show toward the starter. the lights, radio, etc. work fine... which means it isn't the battery. there's no clicking when you go to start the car, which is how we came up with it being the starter. i tried jumping it, and even that didn't work. so my brother popped the clutch, as it had a hard time starting. but i was advised by my brother not to drive it to school because when it comes time to go home, there's not going to be a slope for me to roll down to pop the clutch again. blah.

first all, has anyone had to replace their starter yet? and if so did you get it done? or did you do it yourself? is it easy? i hate the fact that it's the holiday's and instead of spending my hard earned cash on presents and gifts, i gotta do this first.

any help is appreciated. thanks in advanced!

The starter for the 5s-fe is easy to replace since its easy to get too. Its right above the tranny.

I just had it done on my 5s-fe Camry i-4 5spd. It took only 20 mins to do. Very easy...

LOL. ^^ milt. hahaha.

okay. sooo.... we took of the starter, not knowing if the starter was a problem or not. it's so easy, just a lil elbow grease is i needed. but we took it to autozone so that they could test it to see if that was the problem. well, he said that it works fine. so then i'm thinking ... fakk. im screwed if its something more serious. so we come home, put it back on, plug it in. and for laughs i said, lets try to start it up.

AND IT STARTS!!

me and my buddy looked at each other like. WTF? lol. then we high fived each other b/c it started up fine. but now im thinking.. WTF was it then? if it wasn't the starter? maybe there was just buildup or some crap? or... the lil clip thing wasnt clipped in correctlly? or maybe its the fact that i have a remote-start on a manual?

anyway the guy that installed the alarm for me is coming to look at it, and i think i might just have the remote-start disabled.... who knows what the problem was... all i know is it started. but im not driving it till the alarm guy takes a look at it. im thinking it had something to do with the clutch relay... :/

yeah my old car had similar problem and it turns out it was my aftermarket alarm was mess up. Disconnect the ignition kill wire and problem solved. For that reason, some installer would advice not to connect the ignition kill. good luck

I had the same issue once. It was an issue with an electric short (specifically, my HID ballasts shorting with some part of my chassis/engine bay. The double sided tape I used to use didnt hold up very well, and the ballast kept dropping and shorting with unidentified parts of my engine.).

Everything worked eletrically, but it refused to crank. Must be some type of safety mechanism. Even if I remounted the ballast, removing the short, it still wouldnt start. Also, disconnecing the battery for a few seconds didnt work. I needed to disconnect the battery, wait a good 15 minutes, hook it back up, and then it would start.

It happened to me about 3 times before I bought some super sticky tape for the ballast, then it never happened again.

Could be the same thing, or something completely different, but the symptoms sound the same.

thanks for all the help guys... but i think i figured out the problem. i think it had to do with the alarm b/c it cranks fine now... but then my bro was looking at it & said i needed to replace my altenator belt, looked loose or something. so yeah. getting that done either tomorrow or sunday.

thanks again guys, you're all great!

hmmm... it looks like the switch/sensor when you depress the clutch is knocked out or not hitting the contact.

what others have said, you can disconnect that wire (not sure which one to be exact,) so you won't have to depress the clutch in order to start the car in the future.

okay.

so today, as im already running behind for an 8am final. my car doesnt start again.

i think i've pin-pointed the problem.

it has to do with my remote start. last week, i started the car using the remote start, and the next morning it didn't start. last night i did the same, and the car didn't start this morning.

i'm having someone come and look at it... again. i think i'm just going to do away with the remote start since i'm having so much trouble with it. blah.... my car hates me, i swear.
