Oil leak estimate question

Hey all, most of us are probably having the same problems on our cars so just wanted to get some info:
1999 Toyota Solara V6 - 102k miles
Anyone have estimates for: (my dealer estimate was ... )
Valve cover gasket install ($385)
Oil pan reseal ($280)
tranny pan gasket install ($140)
Prices above include parts. How long can I wait to have this done? I went to a Toyota dealer for these estimates. I know it will save some money if I go to a regular mechanic, would that be ok? The sludge problem would not affect the above, right? Haven't read anything that would say it would, but just checking.
