the color code is printed on the door. ignoring the fact that that's dishonest, the original color of the car be determined fairly easily, the dealer would also know. but if they like the color and it's a good paint job i guess it doesn't matter

if you change the paint it does make the price of the car go down. Even if it looks better then facatory, just becuase of the fact its not factory just like if you smoke in it or change the head unit. Everything make it decrease.

If you get a right shop to do the right job, then your car's value holds up, and improves, at least thats what I feel. I had my celica repainted back to its FACTORY original red (it is a 1990 celica) about two years ago. The cost to me was $1600. I know a lot of people get the MAACO paintjob, and think thats painting. Actual painting involves the factory process...get the shop to scrape to the bare metal, and then de-dent...get everything pulled out seperately (bumpers, etc)...then prime, paint, clearcoat, etc them all individually. Here are my celica pics...its a 1990!http://www.cardomain.com/id/jhbhatia

yeah. that's so stupid. you can have an ugly paint job from the factory and have it higher valued than an awesome new paint job??

i know that the factory uses all kinds of layers and coats to keep it long lasting, but my paint is starting to look kinda funky. there are these spots on parts of my car (about the size of a quarter). it's discolored (i've got a black car, and these spots are of a slightly lighter color). can a car shop mimick the coating that the factory uses?

Yeah if you go back to the factory color and it looks very good and the shop did it right then the price will stay the same but if you change the color completely like i did it will lower the price of it for the factory . but if you do change the color make sure you do the door jams and engine and trunk jams.

I have an aquaintance that does restorations on cars. In doing so, he actually improves on factory work by focusing on the fit and finish so that it perfect when he is done. He actually uses Vernier calipers and the tolerances that he uses is 0.002", believe it or not! There is never ANY defect in his workmanship when he is done. He charges 3 arms, 2 legs and your first born child but it's worth it in the end. Right now he is doing another friend's all numbers matching 1966 Plymouth GTX convertible 426 Hemi, 4 speed ...... one of 12 known to still exist!
DROOL!

That kinda' work does nothing but increase the value of your car.

Also, If you change the color of the car the value decreases by 40-50%. So if and when you do get rid of it. Just get any old kinda paint job that matches factory specs. Even Maccos paint jobs look good for Three weeks or so ( or three washes which ever comes first)
So me placing 10 inch rims on my car will make it handle better? Cool.
