2003 SLE Convertible Subwoofer Replacement Question

Postby UTEE » Tue Dec 26, 2006 7:33 am

Hello All, I searched and didn't see anything on this specifically, so I apologize if this issue has already been addressed.

I have a 2003 Solara SLE convertible, and the subwoofer seems to have blown out. From reading various topics on this board, it seems like this is might be fairly common, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to replace it? It sounds like the sub is directly behind the rear seat, and I don't see an easy way to remove the trunk lining to get to it, but I could certainly be missing something.

Has anyone ever done this before, and if so, any tips or tricks? Any ideas on a good replacement and what it might cost?

Also, does anyone know how much a dealer might charge to perform this replacement and how long it might take?

Thanks in advance for your advice, this rattling is just about killing me!

you sure it's not a speaker(s)?
I never knew the 03 solara came with a sub.

the best way to do this, whatever the issue may be, is if it's something minor like this, bring it to a friend or something, dealerships will rip you off tooth and nail to get their money.
at least with buddies, you can trust them in their work. (I'd hope)
where many hate, few will love,
But for those who love,
they'll see what it's like to live.

I just pulled the rear subwoofer out of my 02 conv. The only way I found was to remove the shelf that the convertible closes on. You have to get in the back seat with the top up and pull all of the fastners out and remove one of the plastic strut covers. I also disconnected the defroster wires to allow the shelf to move around more. After you pull it back on one side, you can see the four screws on the front that hold the subwoofer in. Just remove these four and the subwoofer comes out. If you take the back seat out, it would be easier to access the screws, but I got it out without removing the seat. The speaker is a JBL 10" woofer labelled 17 watts. Now I'm off to see if I can locate a shallow replacement that is 3.25" deep or less. The Pyle driver I had laying around was 4.5".
