Dissapointment

Dissapointment

So I was very dissapointed in my baby yesterday, a 2002 with 40k miles. I drove down to Dallas from Kansas City, and about 45 minutes outside of Dallas I noticed my check engine light was on. I also noticed the area near my feet was becoming very warm. The engine temperature was fine, so I pulled over to see what I might find out. Nothing out of the ordinary. I tried disconnecting the battery, however the check engine light remained on. I attributed this to the fact that the car was still pretty warm. I let the car cool down for an hour or so, then headed on towards Dallas where I found the nearest Auto Zone. The guy there told me the problem was with the catalytic converter. After resetting the check engline light it did not come back on, of course the car had been sitting for 1 hour, then driven for half hour, then sitting for half hour, again. I drove around for a while and everything seemed to be fine. Drove downtown, drove back, everything was fine. As a result of this, I decided to end the trip early. Driving back to Kansas City I made it within an hour when I noticed the check engine light was back on. The area around my feet was warm again, however not nearly as hot as it was the first time. Shortly after smoke began to come from the driver's side at the back of the hood. When I pulled over, however, the smoke immidiately stopped. When idling the smoke did not appear, nor when reving the engine in neutral. I had my friend rev the engine while I checked the exhaust, which I discovered was sputtering. My best guess was that the smoke coming from the hood was not actually smoke but exhaust? After letting the car cool for some time and then driving again the "smoke" reappeared after several minutes, however then it dissapeared again.

So.... any ideas?

Blown gasket on the exhaust manifold is the current theory.

The engine temperature stays stable. The heat is a result of the exhaust blowing on the firewall.

at 45k, i had a leaking head gasket. however in your spot a blown exhaust gasket does not sound too bad.

Now I'm not so sure anymore... because I could see the exhaust coming out... and then it stopped... and then it started again, and then it stopped.

If you see your enigne bay that has exceed oil kind of dirt on your component, then it must be exhaust.

and what is your check engine code?

Is your car 4 cylinder or 6?

Do you smell oil burn while you driving?

Well my opinion then is instead of didling with it to figure out what is wrong just bring it to the dealer.

I know but when it start coming to "I think I know" then to "well maybe it's not" :) I would just give up and let someone tell me. Car's are to weird sometimes to pinpoint anything.

One catalytic converter, one exhaust manifold gasket, one oxygen sensor, and one air fuel sensor later all is better.
