grandma car ?

Postby stainless » Wed Jan 31, 2007 10:32 am

Hello everyone, just bought my 2001 solara Image
its an SLE v6 but it's been called a grandma car by 3 people now and its kinda starting to get to me. Its got tan interiour with a wood trim... I'm scheduled to tint the windows next week but I was wondering, what upgrades can I do to this car to get away from the grandma look and more into the sporty look. I have about 2000 dollers and I was really looking into rims but dont want to change out the tires (their brand new). Would it look fugly if I got some nice rims (I was looking at black rims but wondering ya'lls opnion) on 17 inch wheels?

any other ideas? thanks..

oh I thought I would add that I'm 18... just for the hell of it... and that I really really like astro's solara,(sorry said apocalypto for some reason lol) probably my favorite that Ive seen but it looks like he has ALLOT more money into it than I could ever afford.

Don't let it get to you some people call it a grandma car who cares. I have had retards in mustang V6s call it a chick car but as far as I am concerned it is a comfy and very fun to drive car that looks good and goes fairly fast so who cares. Now a Buick le saber on the other hand or a Grand Marquis those are granny cars.

My ride doesn't look close to a grandma car...but I've had grandmas compliment on it :-?

Don't worry what others say! This is your ride, if you're not happy with it then change. I've been very happy with mine, it's even better when you supercharge it! I've put a lot of time and money into mine, I plan on keeping it for a loooong time :D

The whole reason I bought my solara was because I never saw anyone under 50 driving one. Even after I bought and lowered it, everyone asked if it was my moms car. They stopped asking after I got the rims tho.

Where abouts are you from? If you get winter, its good to have a nice set of summer rims, and through the stock rims back on for winter. 17s can look pretty good, but if you get a rim with a lip they will probly look to small. And you will definitly want to lower it, looks 100x better.

Welcome !!

- Lower the car (most important)...(some spring$ or coilover$$$)
- Get some 18's or 19's rims (I don't like black on black on pics I saw...maybe a question of taste or maybe in real it is pretty hot)
- TRD lip kit
- CP-e MAFci intake

No more grandma anymore !!

Go see cardomain.com and seek for 1999-2003 Toyota Solara...there is really nice setup !!

with Gen 2 wheels

These comments lead me to believe you need to research your tires/wheels more. tires are meant for a rim size (17's). Your existing tires can only be used on other 16 inch wheels. With that said, i wouldn't waste money on other 16' wheels unless you plan to plus size (17-18-19) and buy appropriate tires with them.

ok im pretty confused now lol, after doing some research I think im going to pass on the body kit. Its just to expensive after painting + shipping.

This is pretty much what I want

- Fresco Bob's rims on my current tires (if this is even possible)
- and to lower my car
