engine redlining by itself

engine redlining by itself

i was driving in fifth gear going about 50 and about half a mile up the light was turning yellow, so i step on the gas then release and put the car into neutral without using the clutch as i usually do.. before i start my braking the engine just started to rev wildly, rev limiter bouncing and everything.. i wasnt even stepping on the gas! after about 6-7 seconds it returned to normal idle as i was coasting to a stop.. this totally freaked me out. has this ever happened to anyone else??

Not sure but on my accord the throttle cable is alittle like the toyotas. I know when I clutch in my RPM WILL NOT drop instantly. It does this just in case i decide to drop back into gear that the car wont jerk. I can imagine you throwing it into netral without the clutch and the throttle idle system things your still going in gear and bounces all the way up to redline. I dont know if that exist in toyota, But my honda has done it before only not all the way to reline. Just 100RPM and back and thats with only clutching halfway.

i found the problem! i think..

it did it again this time but good thing i caught it before it hit redline.

CRUISE CONTROL is the culprit

i was on the freeway about to exit and im going about 70 in cruise control.. again i clutchless neutral it, then right as i was going to step on the brakes, my engine started to rev up again like last time without me stepping on the gas, i tapped the brakes and it went away immediately.

so im pretty sure its the cruise control telling my car im still in gear when im not, because when in cruise it automatically disengages when you depress the clutch and/or brake pedal no? and i pressed neither

o well, something simple, no clutchless shifts into any gear while in cruise

yeah, I was gonna reply with the cruise control answer also... happened to me like this...

drive with cruise control going 60 or so, cruised down a hill, so clutch in, shift into neutral. Cruise control disengage like it's suppose to... then at bottom of hill, I forgot to shift back into 5th, but press the "resume" button on the cruise control lever. That thing then rev like crazy up to redline, i'm like ohhhh sh*tttt... but yeah, always remembered to shift it into 5th before engaging again after that...

haha, yeah, go try it... Like I said, the only thing that happens is that your engine automatically revs up to redline for you... something that you've done at least once or twice in your life... but just to watch your car do it, without you pressing on the throttle yourself... it's kinda funny
