Smaller SC Pulley and known issues . . .

What's up guys! Been out for too long due to some stuff but my Solara is still alive and well @60k. I'm still a regular here, Camryman and TeamSC3 forum. Since I hit 60K, I'm pondering to have some stuff change out. I have the parts which I'm undecisive to put on. I have the stock setup with 4psi pulley and original Kazuma pulley assembly. In my inventory I have the 6psi pulley from Jim@FA, the Dynamic Tensioner, the Denso IK-22 plugs, and the untuned SAFC. I never have to adjust my belt and I still get the right boost. I saw a few posts regarding the smaller pulley with knocking sensor problems; and also the idling noises from the dynamic tensioner. I'm just wondering how many of you guys running 5.5 or even better, 6psi pulley and still rolling without any problems? My money is kinda tight right now (who isn't??) and I really hate to put on the smaller pulley and experience the knock sensor blowing out on me.... Or maybe I'm just gonna sell the unused parts to you guys! :) Thanks for responses!

well, as far as i can gather, via information from ryan and steve (flip and str8pyp) if you have the upgraded 2.75 pulley, you risk blowing your knock sensors. this equates to 6.5 lbs of boost.

with the parts you have (2.9 pulley, and S-AFC) you should be just fine. a couple of guys on the boards here have that same set-up. maybe they'll chime in any time soon and spill their info.

I have been using a 6.2 psi pulley for a while (> 6 months , > 15k)
and it goes fine so far. Nothing is blown out.

To remove the stock pulley, untighten the belt by adjusting the Altenator belt screw, untighten the pulley bolt and take it out, and put the upgraded pulley in. as simple as that. Mine is the Kazuma model that does not have belt tensioner so things are a bit easier.

PS: krooked Solara, I love ur sig! :D

I am running 5.5 psi and a SAFC and I just smoked my knock sensors and it sucks. I think the type of gas you use has a lot to do with it, here in Ca the best I can get is 91 which just does not cut it when running more than 4 psi. If I could go back in time I would have just left the stock pulley on because it is turning in to a never ending pain in my a$$.
But do what you want other people have had better luck with this stuff than me. Just be prepared to shell out more cash and kiss your warrenty good bye.

Good Luck

That could get expensive. Steve Chung had suggested pure toulene at one point which is around 116 octane to mix with 91 octane to raise it. You can also try octane booster if you'd like.

We have 93 Octane here in Orlando, probably not going to help much then.... I guess staying stock is probably the safest way for now. Thanks for the responses!

Don't use octane booster.

You sure Steve suggested that? Pure toulene is dangerous for our computer controlled engines. Octane booster only moves up octane by "Points" as in .1 .2 .3 not 1 whole octane. Make sure you have your facts clear next time you state them Ross.

I am almost 100% sure it was steve who had suggested it. It was on the teamsc3 board and the guy was in a foreign coutry who only had 80 octane. He wanted to SC his camry but he knew he needed to run higher octane fuel. In the reply the person(who i believe to be steve) also posted a website which explained exactly how to do it.

If the teamsc3 forum was up, I'd search for the link
