but this matter is quite urgent, and I think I'll get more feedback regarding my problem here than in the Camry section. Once again, I apologize for posting in wrong section as my car just won't start at all.

From my post over @ CMPL::
I've been having troubles over the last few weeks starting up my car when it's been put away overnight. I'll turn the key, and it won't crank. All electronic devices work, i.e. radio/windows/locks/headlamps, but it just won't crank at all. All I hear is the buzzing noise (fuel pump?). I'd let it sit for 10 seconds, give the gas pedal a few taps, and it'll stutter a bit before me giving another few taps of the gas to get it starting.

Just at first, it won't even crank at all, given my ritual over the past few weeks. Same symptoms, all electric items work, but no crank. Someone mentioned a air/fuel sensor last week? Could that be the culprit to this starting problem, as well as my un-Camry-like rough idle for the past several months? And yes, the car's a California-emmissions vehicle.

Now I need to ride my bike to school! ggRRR :(

Corey,

Go get your battery and alternator load tested at Autozone or Kragen. If your starter was going out, it would just get stuck turning or making ugly sounds after you let off the "Start" position. Your rough idle could be associated to 1) a tune up 2) engine carbon removal 3) dirty throttle body. Your starting symptoms sound like your battery needs to be replaced.

I would say it is the battery, the samething happend to me last week. Same exact symptoms. Even though I thought it was weird to have to replace the battery already. How long is the factory battery supposed to last? My car was built Sept. 1999 (it is a 2000).

Thanks guys. I finally found some time to work a new sig. I hate working on PS because I end up working on it for a couple hours more than I really should have. Sucks to be particular on the smallest details.

I'm actually going to have to disagree with flip about the battery. judging by what you're saying based on my roadside experience at work, it's probably not the battery. If it were a clicking noise, not a buzzing, I'd say maybe the battery. Considering though that you are getting it to start after, it's more than likely not the battery.

It really depends though, cause sometimes it seems obvious that a car won't take a jump, and then it strangely does...doesn't necessarily mean that it will keep the charge if you turn the car off, but still.

What mostly makes me think it's not the battery is that 1) you let the car sit for a sec, you pumped the gas AND then it started 2) All electrical stuff works (although sometimes the car will still jump even if there is power) 3) you could get it started without jumping it

I guess the only way to know is to hook that baby up w/ some jumper cables!!

although, now that i'm rereading the post and the car isn't started at all, but you still have power...sounds like it could be the battery.

hummm..when you turn the key in the ignition, what sound does it make? clicking/no noise usually = jump start/replace battery. grinding/trying to crank over noise = tow/not the battery.

6 hrs and $140 later...

Postby SKYravefever » Fri May 02, 2003 2:31 pm

I pulled out the battery to test it at Kragen. The little green eye was still there, but the guy at the Kragen counter said it was dead. I didn't trust him, so I went to another Kragen (I had to pick up some spark plugs anyway, since the 1st store didn't have them in stock.) The 2nd one showed me the reading, and said it was OK.

I then pulled the starter out, and had it tested. It was indeed the starter. Went over to this place that rebuilt motors, and bought one for $140, as compared to the $220 Kragen wanted. Now it starts! yay!

Thanks for all your input, On and off-topic  I've received many replies on this subject here on SG, CMPL, and TN, and would like to thank you all for your input. I undoubtedly love this Camry/Solara community, in a non-homosexual way, of course, but maybe in a heterosexual way with the ladies here.....
