damn water/snow -- foglight help

Postby bassthrive » Tue Feb 27, 2007 4:17 pm

same thing happened to my fog; filled up with water. i was however able to remove it, drain it, let it dry completely, and seal a pretty decent crack with silicone.

since removing it is impossible, i would remove the bulb, drill a small hole at the bottom to drain it, let it sit in the sun to dry out as long as possible, maybe go so far as to wipe out as much as possible through the bulb socket, or even heat it with a hair dryer for a few minutes or blow compressed air to facilitate the evaporation process, finally seal the drill hole with silicone along with any visible cracks/splits/seams that you can see.

You might want to try the spray type of Sea Foam... Now that stuff is both a good penetrating lube AND good for automotive lubing/cleaning! I tried it to fix my fireplace damper to free a stuck bolt that had it constantly propped open (about 50 years old with quite a bit of rust that I even used a breaker bar with)... After using a plumber's wrench and quite a bit of the stuff, I'm finally able to close it without spending too much effort removing it.

actually, i just tried that yesterday when the weather was in the 40s.. still no luck.. i have a whole set of automotive tools but yet nothing is working.. seems as if that stuff was welded on, even had a couple of my buddies that are much bigger than me try, no luck..

Lol, I wish, but don't want to pay for a new bumper etc..

seems like I will just wait and hope that this crap dries up in the summer or even spring time.

Thanks to everyone for their help so far.

try wet/dry vac

Postby jersolazy » Sun Mar 04, 2007 12:13 pm

i cant recalled from the top of my head how big the bulb's hole is but am sure u can find an adapter that will fit it. In anycase, my little 6hp shop vac is good for sooking up a good amount of water. And if you dont have one, try home depot, they rent it for pretty cheap. good luck
If I only knew yesterday what I know now!!!

Jeff,

1) Take the bulb out. (I believe you have already...)

2) "TWIST" a shop towel (the "BLUE PAPER" type) into a "long rope"

3) While "twisting" it in a "tightening" direction, ease it INTO the fog-light through the opening until the tip "dips" down into the "water"...

The fluid will now "WICK" up the paper towel... and if you have TOO MUCH for just ONE "dipping"... then REPEAT until ALL MOISTURE has been evaporated/wicked off...

Once APPARENTLY dry inside...

4) Prep another "shop towel rope" but this time, DIP the end in ALCOHOL (like ISOPROPYL clear)

5) Insert the tip into the opening and "manipulate" it around to "capture" remaining moisture as the "FUMES" help evaporate off any excess...

NOTE: If you have access to a SMALL pack of DESECANT, you can CAREFULLY tape it to a small diameter shaft and carefully INSERT it into the opening and leave it there for awhile until it absorbs any moisture... (This method may leave LESS residue of "gas" than alcohol... etc...)

6) Check your SEALING (bulb and housing) and reinstall the bulb...

VIOLA!

(That might work...)

Even if you dry it out ,you have to consider how its gonna affect your lighting. You wont have crystal clear lens, so you'll lose some Shine. If you cant wipe the inside of the lens, its better just going with new ones if you can But if you cant screw it and stick with those. There always gonna bother you.........mine do

Crisp thanks for your help!
I shouldve thought of that before. but unfortunately the Windy City's weather is back frozen again at the temp of 24 degrees today, so it's now ice in my foglight housing, and I'm not going to put a bulb back in there to steam up the housing more so I might as well wait until it gradually melts again, then i'll try your "wick" method.
Hopefully it works.

^^ Or the middle voice of the violin and cello, but that's more trivia than parody. I'll just shut up now.
