from the toyota site: "New for Solara are Satellite XM radio, and navigation system options. "

XM would be cool to have. especially factory installed, that'd be great.

Well I konw the whole car was design in the USA and stuff, but I just think that they should've put more hp on it, or does anybody know if TRD is going to make supercharge for the new solara....if they do then the new solara will be pertty fast then.........

You know I find that a very offensive post.

Racism

Postby OceanLake » Tue May 06, 2003 10:08 pm

Dear Folks,

I'm an older fair-skinned person. I think "white" came from sports slang and was first used by darker-skinned American athletes. It may have some connection with vanilla ice cream for all I know. I imagine we've all said things we wish we hadn't, and I feel it helpful for those of good will to firmly but kindly draw attention to the problem.

Maybe "a car liked by a middle-aged, middle-class couple" is what is meant. Anyway, my spouse and I are considering the car and want to hear more about it from enterprising people such as all of you.

P.S. The other car we're interested in is (shudder?) the upcoming Prius.

Sincerely,

A Perhaps Somewhat Stuffy Person
OceanLake

if youre into the styling, go for it! most of us here are more than pleased with our gen 1 solara, and i'm sure then gen 2 has improved on it quite a bit (stylying excepted, perhaps). it's a comfortable, luxurious, reliable & fun (with the right mods) car, and i love how its not too popular.

as for the prius...i'm sure i can see myself driving one of those in a few years (well, as soon as i have to start paying for gas anyways)

Being banned for one comment seems a little extreme. I would just like for you to clarify exactly what you meant by it. My guess is that it was an innocent comment but your choice of words wasn't very good.

It is just another way of saying that 'this car fits into a variety of cultures'. It is a bulletproof fact that the majority of Civic and Integra boys are Hispanic and Asian - at least in California - and they hunger for style. Most people in the forum have commented that the exterior design is disappointing in many different ways, as there are no ways to 'soup up' this particular vehicle to impress the owner. Typically, and I do mean typically, the middle-aged people, who most of them married, perfer a car of either luxury or economy depending on their financial situation, and style becomes a distance secondary. Buying this car means that they do not even look for power as they already KNOW what the fastest cars are (McClaren F1, for example, and you don't think they can't afford one?) and they're not interested in the moment. Again, TYPICALLY middle-aged Asians also look for brands, which sub-catergorizes to reliablity (Hondas, Toyotas), luxury (BMW, Mercedes), or a mixture of both (Infinity, Lexus). A ubiquitous RUMOR has said that domestic cars are trashy although it is nowhere to be true. They make extremely good cars now, but they perfer the annoying gossip instead of trying one. Yet again, TYPICALLY the majority of White people are more tradition-oriented and the design of this solara is nowhere futuristic unlike the new generation Celica. I hope this clears the racial misunderstanding.

Of course, the shortcut here is to learn more about African American history.

As a middle aged white guy who drives a stylized Solara it doesn't bother me a bit that this was said. What bothers me is that people get way too serious about race when there is no slander meant. I understand though, that if someone said that it looks like an Asian or Black person's car offense would probably have been taken and it would have been considered a racist remark even though it may not have been intended as such. People have to be careful about making stereotypical remarks about others of a given race, culture and/or religion. All you have to do is put yourself on the receiving end of the statement and ask yourself "would I be offended?" With that being said, I didn't like the way the current generation Solara looked when pictures were first published, but when I saw it on the lot for the first time I fell in love and orderd one on the spot. It may not be the same for the new generation Solara, but there are things that I like and don't like about it. I'll reserve judgement until I see that puppy in person. By the way.. check out the old white guys Solara. I'm 49, soon to be 50 so if anyone's got any stereotypes about old white guys being out of touch...think again! Dave,

I'm also a middle aged (47) white guy who drives a modified Solara. I never thought his comment was intended to be racist, so I wasn't really offended by it. I just wanted him to clarify what he actually meant.

These types of forums are a great way to exchange information and voice opinions. It would be nice if people actually took the time to think before they just key in whatever words come into their heads. Just my $.02. :)
