Gas mileage going down

Gas mileage going down

Postby Jeffrey Olson » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:30 am

When I got my 99 SE with 92K miles in July it got 31 to 33 mpg. Now, with 107K miles it is getting 25 to 26 mpg. I replaced really aggressive tires with some Michelins, the front and rear left wheel bearings, the front struts, the air cleaner, and that's it. The previous owner assured me all regular maintanence had been done - including timing belt. The car has lots of power - that hasn't changed, just the gas mileage

Any suggestions as to cause, or what you would do to elminate obvious potential reasons?

Thanks...

^ Winter weather could be. I have noticed a decrease in gas, but i can never be sure what the problem may be cause I do a lot of short trips, 5-10mins being in college gotta make runs to walmart and such. I really dont, cant notice if Im having a problem with gas untill I make trips home where I drive 260miles each way, but...

I have about the same mileage on my ticker, I have, or planning on replacing the following:

Fuel filter
Mobil 1 synthetic
Transmission fluid (drain and fill 3-4 times)
Top Valve Cover Gasket (small oil leak)
Coolant flush w/ Orange Prestone or Red Toyota
Seafoam before the next oil change...

All i can think of right now...

Here are a few to consider:

-Oxygen sensors
-Fuel Filter
-Clean injectors
-Spark plugs, wires
-Tire pressure
-Heavy foot..lol

What weight oil are you using?

you're gettin some crappy gas mileage, you might want to get a tune-up.

19 miles to the gallon. You should be happy. I can not get 19 miles to the gallon if I drive down hill all the time. :)

Gas mileage going down

Postby Jeffrey Olson » Wed Mar 07, 2007 3:55 pm

My 99 SE has a six with an auto. The mileage did start to go down when it started getting cold. I drive 500 miles or more a week and use the cruise control 98% of the time I'm driving. It seems to burn about a quart of oil every 3000 miles, but after owning a VW bus, that seems like nothing.

I'm bothered by 26 mpg. If I were getting any less I'd be in a major depression - I bought this car for the power/gas mileage relationship. I think it's time for the stealership (I like that nickname). Black Hills Toyota lets me watch the mechanic while he works, so I'll see what he does.

Someone said they got a scangauge II. I got one. What should the readings be for the solara on the following systems?

Fuel Economy
» Intake Air Temperature
» manifold Pressure
» Engine Load
» Throttle Position
» Ignition Timing
» Open/Closed Loop

wait wait..29-30 on a solara?

I've never passed 23.5 on my solara! even in the summers. I'm at 116K, heres what i had done

New tires..air checked.
Spark plugs
Water Pump and belts changed.
Fuel injector cleaner (use once in 6 months)
Regular oil change
K&N air filter

and i'm fed up of the mpg's i'm getting - i only use BP 87 grade gas. (i've tried premium n had no change). I drive city/hwy mix

any suggestions?
