Brake Light comes on for no reason??? HELP!!!!

Postby theDarkStranger » Tue May 06, 2003 8:23 am

This is my second post here.

First off love the site. Second, I need help with this issue. 2000 Solara V6 SLE. The brake light in the gauge cluster comes on when it feels like. I know that the parking brake is not one. The brake pads are fine. But when the car is in motion the stupid light comes on. A buddy of mine said it may be the Parking Brake sensor which is possible.

But where is it and how can I know for sure it is that?
Is the part expensive?
Is it easy to reapiar?

Please if you have come across the same thing please tell me what you did to fix it and if you have never came across this then please let me know how to check the sensor or where to get a new sensor.

thanks

The parking break sensor is under the parking brake itself. You can remove the center console to check if it got stuck or something...

pry off the shifter cover. This reveals 2 screws toward the cupholder side. Take those off. Then open your center console and take out the "carpet". There will be 2 more screws there. Take those out. Now your center console should slip off. Move the parking brake and you will see the sensor... well more like a button, that is used for detecting whether or not the parking break has been disengaged
1GR-FE ftw!

make sure your brake fluid reservoir os *fully* topped off before ripping apart the parking brake cluster. the light will come on if the fluid is not to the "max" line. and yes that could happen intermittently due to uphills and downhills where the fluid moves around.

thanks to both of you. I will check this out later this weekend.

I did check the fluid a while back but come to think of it I can't remember if it was more than max so that way if the car was uphill of downhill it would still be at max. I will check that first. If so then on to the Sensor.

Any price on the sensor?
Also a place to get it other than the dealership?

the one next to my place are total asses.

thanks

i highly doubt the sensor will be the problem. however it is possible. i had that light come on and once i changed my front pads, the light went away when the E brake was disengauged.

The parking brake "sensor" appears to be just a switch according to the schematics. I'm not sure if the switch is closed or opened when the parking brake is engaged. In any event, if the switch is the problem (and not the fluid level switch) then you can disable the switch by either connecting the two wires together going to switch or pulling one wire off the switch. One of the two will get the light to go off if it's a bad switch. I also wouldn't think the switch would go bad, so maybe just an adjustment is needed to operate the switch correctly.
Good luck!

Please try the SEARCH function first. Then ask a question if you cannot find it. :)

fill up some new toyota brake fluid...as see if the light goes away...Its happened before to my celica, camry and my es...Usually that solved my problems...but i've heard somepeople had to change the front brake pads (www.celica.net) to get that light to go away...could be a leak in the line..could be worn brakes, could be low fluid! yeah..use the search button!

I think it's ok, some people are a bit worried when stuff are
happening to their car.

Using search is best use when trying to get some aftermarket parts, or educational purpose.

But not very practical when is use for trouble shooting since we are talking about personal specific problem. also, it will get faster reply.

Unless you know a good search filter, it's kinda tough.
Try to search on brake, u get bunches of result (six pages!),
ending up spending more time trying to hunt and (hopefully) you can find the right solution.

After all, we all are here to help each other rite?

I did do a search and it came up with like a trillion posts that had the work brake in it. I would have take me like about a week to search through it all. Thats the reason I posted what I did. Hope it was no harm in the space on the server that is hosting this. I mean a 2k database file shound't be but who knows. :D

thanks for the heads up and Believe me when I say I searched.

nah, dont think space is really the issue
its just the [minor] annoyance of some of the more common Q's coming up repeatedly
not a big deal though!

That's why you don't just search "Brake". You query "Brake" "light" and "indicator light" or etc.

Since you can't find the old threads just fill up your brake fluid. That's your culprit.
