Apexi WS & Y pipe finally installed

Postby Ragtop George » Sat May 10, 2003 12:20 am

Well I finally got around to installing my Apexi World Sport exhaust and the front exhaust manifold and Y pipe/cat combo that I bought from Jim@FA. Started at about 10:00 PM or so and finished at 1:30 AM. The only real snag was that the manifold from Jim didn't have any studs in it where it bolts to the Y pipe, and so I tried to take them out of my old manifold. One came out easy, the other galled up and all the threads tore off. So I had to use one stud and one bolt to fasten on the Y pipe. I think I have a bit of an exhaust leak because it hisses when I get on the gas.

Anyway, preliminary results: two back to back 6.15-6.17 second 0-60 runs (previous was about 7.0). It is a bit noisy from 1000 to 2000 RPM, but quiet other than that. The power gain is definately at the higher RPMs, 5000-6000 is where it makes the most difference. Just for fun I did a run with the S/C off, it was about 8.9 seconds. So my performance increased about 6-7% when N/A due to the exhaust system, and 14% when S/C.

For anyone who wonders if the supercharger makes much of a difference, my performance gain is now almost 45%!

Oh, and after 20 minutes of driving, no check engine light! Anyway, time for bed.

Wow sounds nice! Hmm I'm assuming your numbers are off a PDA dyno or a G-Tech huh?

I seems to have gained power all all speeds, just more at higher RPM. It spins the tires more at launch, so there are gains from the lowest usable RPM, at least at full throttle.

Unfortunately, my CEL came on today, so I guess I will need an oxygen sensor simulator.

I time the runs with a stop watch and the speedometer (which I have verified the calibration of) out on a consistent section of highway. It's not hyper accurate, but I do repeated runs quite regularly, so I have learned to be consistent. My absolute numbers may be off a hair, but the relative gains should be very close.

how much hp does the apex'i supposedly add? and can u feel that gain? I have a v6 none s/c so I'm wondering if it's worth the price. Also, I thought Apex'i exhaust kits came w/ the entire catback? inluding y pipe....

Catback means the piping goes up to the cat, the Y pipe is before the cat therefore it's not replaced with the catback system.

Do a search around. Almost all catbacks are useless on a NA car but they provide heavy gains with a SC

Normally Aspirated. It means that the car has no forced induction, like superchargers or turbochargers.
