brake issues.. HELP..

hi people. i noticed something terribly wrong with my braking system today, and needed assistance. i was cruising don the highway , at a steady 40-45mph , with a file of cars ahead, and as i was approaching the light, which had turned red , braked. now while doing this, my sol did decelerate for a second or two, and then the brake system completely shut off for about a second , before coming back on, albeit after me slamming them. this might seem a little extreme, but it really did happen. i actually think it has happened twice, but the times were not so noticable. anywho, i urgently need some insight coz the idea or rear-ending someones shlick scholck isn't in my best interest.
it might be worth it to mention that i have ceramic duralasts in the rear (90%) and about 50% in the front ones, so i really dont think it has anything to do with the pads. as i mentioned, the ENTIRE system disengages for a period of time, so something somewhere isn't happening....

Are you sure its just not your ABS??

Hmm... Is it more of a buzzing sound that might also have vibrating, or does it seem that you'd have to floor the brakes to get it to stop at a normal pace? If it's the former, like Jai said it might be the ABS; happens to me when I go over an uneven road that I've just learned to adapt to. However if it's the latter, it might be a problem with your booster.

nope fellas. this is happening very very randomly, and as much as abs seems likely, i dont think it is. i pretty much drive the same route about 4 times a day, and it happens at all the odd instances. there is not uneveness , no surface water or anything that would cause it to kick in. the flooring is as exactly as you described it, though at times it will slightly swerve in aone direction. i might end up having it checked sometime, even though am pretty sure the dumb ass will disregard it. thanks tho

If I understand what you are describing correctly, I believe it IS your ABS. But I think it's broken, mabye a sensor is out indicating (intermittently) that the wheel is locked and the computer is releasing the brake. I definitely don't think this is normal.

When you were stopping and the system seemed to "shut off", were you just braking normally, you know, until that moment of panic when if felt like you were accelerating?

If you have the car coded out, Toyota does have a proprietary set of ABS codes and it wouldn't necessarily turn on the check engine light since that is primarily for emissions. You will need a scanner that has the ABS codes in it to read them though. That might mean the dealership.

Please post a more thorough description of the problem and don't forget to update when it's fixed.

precisely as as stated. yep, it does feel for a moment as if it actually accelerating , and yes, it hasen't shown any light. it hasen't been shutting off of late, but i will keep u all posted. thanks for the info.
