Another Y-Pipe Installed!

Another Y-Pipe Installed!

Yep, just got it installed this past Saturday...

Loving the sound, and loving the better airflow i'm getting. I can feel performance gains in towards the mid and higher RPM's... As of current, I got stock exhaust manifolds (headers), Dat's Y-pipe, and stock resonator and stock muffler. As of now, there isn't a cat, but I can possibly change that in the future. In order to fix the CEL, i used the fix where you make the o2 sensor further away from the exhaust stream. This is where you get those spark plug anti-fouler and combine two of them. More details if you ask me.

In this first video,

Image
start-up was cold, and thus, start-up is louder than the 2nd clip. You can make out most of the sounds, but when I rev louder, and more exhaust come out, due to the positioning of the camera I guess, there's some distortion on the microphone. Basically sounds like a lot of wind...

In this second video,

Image
car was already previously warmed-up. I position the camera a little bit further away to avoid any distortion. 1st part of the video is me revving to 2k, then to 2k again slowly, then to 3k quick, then to 5k quick, then to 6k quick. Then a series of quick up to 3-4k's.

2nd part of the video is me moving the camera to where the driver side door is, bsically where the y-pipe ends and where the "test pipe" is. Some quick revs up to 3-4k here also.

Last part of the video is just what it sounds like inside of the car...

So yeah, I tried to make this as clear as possible for anyone who wondered what adding the y-pipe sounds like, and what does it do.
There's also not that many clips where someone upgraded ONLY their y-pipe. Everyone else got upgraded muffler too, so it's kinda hard to tell what ONLY upgrading the y-pipe does.

Enjoy the clips and give any questions/comments.

just to let you know. i ran without a cat for 2 months and it trimmed my fuel 20%. your best bet is to cut off the stock can and put it in

Wonder how loud that would be with my JIC exhaust :drinking:

Sounds REALLY good though, aside from that rattling or whatever in the high end.

Thanks ThatVietGuy...

Hey NRDriver, can you elaborate? Trimmed your fuel by 20%? Where'd you get that number? By trimming your fuel, you mean you were running really lean or something?

your best bet is to cut off the stock can and put it in

Did you mean to say cut off your stock cat? But if you put back in the stock cat... it's like almost taking away the purpose to upgrading the y-pipe right? (other than the better flow at the junction of the two exhaust manifolds) Having no cat, mean A LOT better flow, so why would that be bad?

fuel

Postby NRDriver » Sat Apr 07, 2007 3:07 pm

i used a snap-on scan tool with ODB2 and looked to see how my car was reacting to not having a cat. since the rear o2 sensor was reading rich with the absence of a cat, it kept trimming the fuel to compensate. after a couple of weeks it was permanaely trimming the fuel 18.2 percent and i had a CEL.

the y pipe is a 3" pipe which is great but its still getting bottlenecked where it ends so i dont think putting on the stock cat will really hurt. most of the restrictions in the stock y pipe were in the design of it. Not the CAT

Cool, I understand what you're tying to say now, but what if i'm placing my O2 sensor further away from the stream like this... (not my pic, but same set up)
Image

It wouldn't be reading rich would it? Fuel consumption would continue to be the same wouldn't it be?

But in any matter, i'm considering finding a high-flow CA emssions cat anyways. Running w/o one is just too loud...

But for those who love,
