Disappointment TRD Muffler

Hey I just installed a TRD muffler for my car and im a little disappointed. My main goal for this mod was for a sportier sound. Not really looking to get any performance out of the engine cause it serves no point for me in this car. It accomplishes a good sound but the problem is that its hardly loud enough for me to hear. My buddy said that he thought that there is a secondary muffler on our cars and if i remove that and put a straight pipe in it should accomplish this. I am three hours away from my car right now so I cant look but is there a secondary muffler up front that i can remove? I actually drove the car for a couple of miles without the muffler to get some exhaust hangers from autozone cause I cut the old ones off and without a muffler it wasnt very loud in the low and high rpm range. But in between 2-3k rpm range it was very loud. But doing something like gutting the TRD muffler would be too loud on daily basis for that range. I just want to figure something out where it is loud enough for me to hear. With no muffler the sound I feel would be ricey to me because it sounds like my car has a lot of balls with nothing to back that up. But right now I feel that the TRD muffler was a waste of money for what it does.

Also I remember when I put some flowmasters on my Camaro the muffler got louder as it was "worn in" or as i used it more. Would the TRD muffler get a little louder as time goes on?

Thanks Chris

adding a muffler is for performance, adding a muffler is not gonna add 100 hp and make it sound like a z06. you're gonna need a few type-r stickers for that.

i have about 750miles on mine and it sounds about the same. an intake will help with 3k+ rpms

There is a resonator between your muffler and your cat, it helps cut down on the sound. Getting a cat-back with 3" piping would help you get the sound you are looking for.

My CP-e intake drowns the sound of Hon-duh (and the likes) "FARTCANS" if I punch it... 8)

...the TRD, on the other hand... has a NICE MELLOW tone... a classy sound on the outside... and a MILD drone on the inside. NOTHING like the ROAR of the CP-e when WTO! :o

Just listen to the clip of my car without an exhaust on it and you'll see how quiet the car is designed to be ;)

go to this thread and check out my custom cat back exhaust. No one here has it yet besides me. Honestly i listened to all the trd exhaust evo etc.. and this one by far is the best sound + i really can feel the difference in performance. Let me know what you think..

i love the sound of my trd on my car. beats having the exhausts that are too loud that vibrate your head into a migraine, or too quiet. I think it's the perfect tone. you can hear it outside, just not inside the car.
where many hate, few will love,
But for those who love,
they'll see what it's like to live.

i dont get it, if you want it louder why dont you just buy a random ebay muffler? you should know trd is known to be the most quiet muffler in the market

Yes your right adding a muffler or any exhaust will improve performance but 3hp is not a large gain. If I wanted to get good power out of my exhaust then I would remove the cat get a good catback system, probably do dats y pipe and find almost the nonexistent headers for our car. Like I said before my goal was to get a sportier exhaust note. Which I did accomplish but its just not loud enough for me to hear inside the cabin of my car. And I know it wont sound like a Z06. Thats a completely different type of engine. Its got a couple extra cylinders and longer stroke with the push rod. I expected it to sound like a 350z which it does.

I agree, like i said I drove my car without the muffler and its pretty quiet at low and high rpm ranges. Just in that 2k-3k range its loud as hell. But that is probably more loud than it needs to be for what I want.

I dont get it either, LOL, I remember reading a post like a year ago were people were comparing exhausts and I strictly remember reading that people said that the TRD was pretty loud. Supposedly it was louder than the Greddy Evo2. I would try to find that post but there are so may threads on exhaust that I think it would take a long time to find it. Actually this is not the first time ive been misinformed. When I was looking for suspensions people have written before that they thought the tein/tokico combo was a stiff setup. They are wrong. Its barely stiffer than what the stock form is. For that mod I was looking to get rid of the wheel gap for my rims and I was actually looking to improve the handling of the car which it did very minimal. A mr2 or a miata in reality would be a perfect car for me because I prefer a good handling suspension over power. (But power is probably second on my list) I know you would say if I was looking to improve the handling that I should have gone with coilovers. But 1600 for coilovers was more than what my budget could afford so I wanted to find the best spring/strut combo which was more my price range. But suspension is besides the point. Just a little short vent of mine LOL.

But back to the exhaust, I think i might try removing the resonator and see if that will give me some more tone. Cause I want something where I can hear a nice engine note from the inside! Oh and will removing the resonator light up the CEL?

Thanks Chris

Resonator is only there to dampen the sound, it has nothing to do with the O2 sensor or any sensors for that matter.

i think the best option for you is resale the trd muffler and get another exhaust set up. i.e. get a whatever muffler with custom 2.5" after catalytic piping alone with a resonator. that will gave you a nice tone without ricer noise (that is what my setup before).

remove the middle resonator might cause your car to have a ricer tone.
