Benefits of Wider Wheels
I'm looking to get some new rims, probably today or tomorrow. I'd like them to be wider than the stock 16x6's that I'm rocking now, which are bent all to hell. I'm looking at 17x7 or 17x8 TSW Kyalami's.

Likely silver just like in the photo. I'd love some 18's, but if I've bent up 16's then what's the point? Yeah 17's aren't any safer, but I don't think I need to explain why I want them. I'm being as practical with this as I can manage, plus I'll be more careful. Anyway, I dig these rims, and I can get them in 17x7 or 8 so which should I choose?
My car already handles like a dream, so if I got 17x8's I figure I could probably do some amazing things. I do want the rims to look natural with the car, would 8's stick out too much at the fender? Even at the bottom by the mud flap? Would spacers help adjust this?
Are wider wheels going to negatively effect gas mileage? I've heard they decrease acceleration, what kind of handling benefits can I expect?
Most importantly: Are TSW's fairly tough wheels? I don't want these to get bent up. I doubt they're forged, but will they hold up? Do wider wheels hold up better than thinner ones?
I'll probably be getting these from discount tire, if anyone can recommend some forged wheels in the $650 price range sans tires I'm all open for it, but I really doubt there's any out there that'd look decent.
