timing belt question

timing belt question

Postby offroadinfrontier » Mon May 07, 2007 6:24 pm

did a few searches and couldnt find anything related to belts or timing belts, so sorry if this is a repeat question:

i'm about due to change my timing belt. im going to go ahead and replace my other belts as well, they're pretty old. other than my water pump, should i invest in any other parts while the mechanic's down there? i've got a nice 116K right now, and I'd like to keep 'em a few more years. thanks!

yes you should replace all of your belt at once. spark plug replacement might be a good idea

when replacing the tensioner check your hydraulic tensioner. The general rule of thumb is if you can compress it at all by hand you should replace. From toyota mechanics i have heard that after 90k its a good idea to replace it and its common for them to seize if used on an old belt too long.

A lot of people like to replace any oil seals that are exposed during the replacement (usually the front seal at the timing belt pulley). This can be real hard to do depending on how easily it is to access.

Post any problems you encounter please. I'm just about to do this on my wife's Solara.

Good luck.

Incidentally, the manual says:

Push the tensioner with both hands strongly against something. The tensioner should not move at all. If it does, replace it. Do not turn it upside down.

Also, check how far it protrudes. It should be 10.0-10.8 mm.

When you are ready to install it, it says to compress it with a press using 200 to 2.205 lbf or pressure!
