Best tire size for the stock rims.

Best tire size for the stock rims.

My stock Michelin MXV4+ (205/60-16) are wearing thin and I'm looking to buy new tires for the stock 16" rims. What would be the best tire size to get for better performance and looks?

The only other size that you can even think about is 225/55/16, although they are at the limit for that narrow of a rim. It will fit, but the tires look a little pinched and the sidewall seems to bulge slightly. I know of several people who have used that size, though, and they have all been happy with it.

i never thought of 225, but 215/55 were pretty good on my stock rollers.

225 will fit, but it will look too much of a trapezoid

Thanks for the advice guys.

On another note, I remember there was a site showing how off your speedometer would be with different tire sizes/ratio. Do any of you remember it?

yeah, it is true in extreme cases like 65 to 40 series, but going from 65 to 55 is fine. (all with the 16' wheel)

Mike is right.

For the most part the speedometer will be fine, unless you change rim sizes, from 16 to 18 or go through extreme changes in tire size.

Yes, here's the website; I use it all the time for reference:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

215/55/16 will be a little smaller diameter than stock, but it won't cause problems with your ABS and the speedo error is minimal. The 225/55/16 size is almost the exact diameter as stock. As someone else mentioned, the 215 will probably look better on your stock rims.

I got a quick question..with bigger rims, does that make your fuel economy worse?

If the overall weight of tires + rims are the same, then it shouldn't affect the milage at all.

Like impactX said, there will be no impact if the overall weight remains the same. If you significantly increase your rim diameter and width (like going from 16 x 6 to 19 X 8), the rims tend to get heavier. This can impact the mileage, but it shouldn't be a huge factor. It will also slow down your launch, if you're into going to the strip. You can buy lightweight wheels, but they tend to be very expensive.
