we had a topic about this Waaayyyyy back.

Basically the bottom line was that you can do it, it's not super expensive, but it sucks b/c it will eventually leak and will never be the same as a factory sunroof.

it shouldn't. most companies that install atermarket roofs will warranty them for 3yr/36K, same as the warranty on a Toyota roof.

Yeah..but since this is a TOYOTA product..his car will outlast the rust that might eventually result from this retrofit...I've spoken to a lot of people about this myself (same boat as you...bought my car w/o one..now wished would have done so otherwise). Bottomline i've learnt, If you park your car indoors (garaged at night, and covered parking at work), then essentially, the weatherstipping aroung the roof will last longer (aftermarket) and will essentially DELAY your leakages...but if you park in the sun..and let it bake..a lot..then your going to exp. this problem within 3-4 years! Hope this helps...

hmm. i don't get why a factory installed roof will outlast a retrofit with a factory product. this is kind of like the factory paint job.

what's different about an add-in roof? do they use lower quality parts?

my dad has a sunroof on his SAAB, and it doesn't require any kind of maintenance that i know of. i could be wrong

I believe it's because the toyotas with the factory sunroof are made specifically like that at the factory with different parts and what not, therefore providing a better fit because it was designed to spec.

If you install an aftermarket or even toyota sunroof on a car that originally came without one, you have to remember you are basically cutting a hole into your roof which can introduce problems such as leaking and/or rusting. It will not be a "perfect" fit like a factory sunroof would be.

Some dealerships (w/ adjoining bodyshops) will do that! Others will outsource to shops that specialize in that!

sorry, i shoul have specified, i don't know of anywhere that will install a TOYOTA roof other than the factory. my dealership installs sunroofs, but they aren't toyota roofs. that you can only get from the factory.
