timing belt question

timing belt question

Postby aleki2424 » Fri Jun 22, 2007 8:04 pm

hey, i was wondering. is it a fact that OEM parts are always the 'best' choice for replacements? especially basic parts such as the t-belt. reason being that i am getting ready to replace mine, and i remember something about OEM belts not doing to well at high RPM's and messing the ignition?

just wanted input from pple who have aftermarket engine parts , and how they performed in the period....

It's my opinion that most of the time, choosing OEM parts is a good idea. But there are some areas where the aftermarket outperforms the manufacturer and there are definitely times when the manufacturer has really lousy parts. The clips that hold down the front trunk (frunk) lid of my Spyder, is a good example. It all depends on the part.

As far as timing belts go, I can't say. I am doing my timing belt as we speak and I got a Toyota belt. I'd like to know as well if anyone has any knowledge as to the poor quality of the Toyota belt.

I kind of doubt there is any problem, myself.

Agreed, OEM is USUALLY the best way to go but not always. Even though I am an OEM freak there are times when I admit there are aftermarket manufacturers that just plain outperform and outlast.

Timing belt though, you can go either way. I recently got mine replaced as well and I went with Toyota's ($40 from the dealership). Overpriced? Heck yes. Could I have gotten it cheaper elsewhere? Heck yes. But I needed it last minute so I did what I had to do.

Messing up ignition and not working too well at high rpm I'd be skeptical about, never heard that one and I don't think I believe it much. I doubt Toyota would overlook something as vital as that.

well if you're getting OEM through toyota, you can kinda have good faith that it wont mess up and its under a 12 month warranty. If your brought in parts, they told me that it wouldnt be covered under that warranty.

and in the same way i didnt really have the time to look into it as much. Nor did i think it mattered to me as much.

Here's a good reason to use the OEM timing belt:

See the timing marks on the belt where the arrows point? Theres a third one on the backside. Do aftermarket belts come with these marks?

The aftermarket OE one I got off azautohaus.com has those marks.

Yeah, now that I've done the timing belt replacement, I realize that the aftermarket belts HAVE to have them, otherwise you might be off by one tooth. My bad.

I usually use Goodyear belts, timing and serpentine. I don't think I would want to go with cheaper aftermarket, especially with the timing belt, just for piece of mind if nothing else. Granted OEM is usually a safe bet also.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

it generally depends on how you drive - if you feel your car is more city driven, then replace it sooner, if you feel your car is mostly highway driven, then you can take it too 100K. I had my camry done at 60 and my solara at 88K. Call me neard, the only reason i did my solara is could i could hear the difference when it was time to get it done.
