In my case, I had to get my car fixed ASAP. There were three different insurance companies involved (4 drivers - I was sandwiched).
Since I couldn't wait, I bit the bullet and had the repairs done through my insurance and paid the $500 deductible. My insurance company (State Farm) knew it wasn't my fault (police report) so my rates were not affected.
After about ayear and a half, I got a check in the mail from State Farm...my dedctible back. I guess they finally worked it out with all the other companies.
Now, since they want to total your car, I'm not sure how much this helps beucase you aren't getting repairs, but trying to get money for the loss.
Again, best of luck!
