key with a transponder

key with a transponder

Postby hari-bhari » Mon Jun 09, 2003 2:52 pm

hey when i got my solara, it was from hertz car rentals (they sell all their cars at 28,000 miles and you get a really good deal). anyways, they only gave us a spare key which is solid metal. theres no black part on top so im guessing no transponder chip. so my questions is where can i get a key with the black top (i personally think they look a lot better than just solid steel like i have now). also, do i then have to program it to activate my engine or something. because right now, the car runs fine on that regular key wihtout any sort of chip. so will i have to program my computer or somethiong to recognize the chip so that it wont start with a reg. key anymore? thanks.

if you want the toyota key, where else to go better than the dealer themselves. i believe it will be $12/ key to be cut. this will be for the normal keys w/o the transponder chip on it.

you might want to poke around llocal locksmiths as well.

yea but i already have a regular, solid-metal 'spare' key. i wanted the key with the black top on it so it looks like the original key you get with the car.

If you want a key with the black plastic top and the toyota logo, you have to goto the dealer. Should be around $10-15 as mike said above.

If you just want a key with a black top you can goto any locksmith but it'll have some label like "ilco" on it, or whatever company makes the key

and no, that's not only for SLE's

ahaha..and the toyota dealer that made me a replicate key (just for the doors since i have the transponder) gave me one of the "ilco" keys.

If you have the plain steel key and it works in the ignition, then you don't have the transponder/immobilizer key. So it should be inexpensive for a locksmith or dealer to cut. (grr..unlike the $65 bucks i spent for spare w/ no remote)

yea, when i bought it i was suppose to get 2 keys..but of course i was so excited picking the car up i didn't even think about getting the second one..i just grabbed the key from the sales guy and speed off asap!

I called the salesguy after and he apologized and said he'd have parts cut one for free if i brought it in so i was thinking, "alright! a free immoblizer". I know how damn expensive they are (hondas are around $40...landrovers around $250).

Then i got there and he brought it to parts and came back and told me it has a chip in it...DUH! so they gave me a "discount" of like $62.85 or something and cut me a regular key for free...(my dad was gonna pay for it to be nice since i'm paying everything else..but of course they didn't take discover..so who ended up paying for it?? )

Goto a local hardware store or search around for the best price.

We charge $2.99 for the metal double sided toyota keys (ILCO TR47)
or $3.49 for the ones with the plastic head

Also we charge $25 for the transponder key including programing. You'd be suprized how much you can get done at a hardware store or locksmith.

Your car may not have the transponder because it is a fleet car Hari. Since rentals likely get their keys lost/not returned on a regular basis, it is likely too expensive for the rental company to keep replacing transponder keys. Plus fleet cars are usually made as inexpensively as possible. Besides, who would want to steal a rental car? (Sorry about that one Hari!)
