key with a transponder

easy way to tell if you need the transponder: if that key you have without the plastic head starts the engine........bingo, you don't have or need a transponder key!

i thought you HAD to get the key from toyota if you wanted another (im talking about the one with the chip in it)
they want to charge me $65 for one

so there's a cheaper way? a regular hardware store should be able to program it?

you can program it yourself if you can get the correct sequence of gas/brake/door opening instructions. but it is easier to use a handheld tester at a dealer.

Almost all toyotas use the same sequence. I'll have my dad bring it home and I'll type it up. The hardware store just has to be able to cut the keys. Even if they don't carry the transponder key, you can buy it online or I can get some from my dads store. Someone on ebay is selling the genuine toyota transponder keys for $25, but of course the ilco blanks would be cheaper

hey thanks for the CHEAP SHOT ragtop, lol. anyways, i want to make sure i get the key that has the toyota logo, i know now that i dont need one with a transponder. ill shop around. but last question, if i did want a key with the transponder for added security, is my engine/ecu even capable of handling a key like that and having it be effective? in other words, if i get a transponder key, can i program it to where only THAT key will start the engine, or does my ecu not have that capability? thanks

my guess is no
if your car was capable of recognizing one, it would've came with one

You are right, it can not be added. Best bet for added protection is to get an alarm with starter kill. Starter kill functions similarly to the immobilizer system

yanks and nasty are right. since your car doesn't have a transponder ecu (and the apropriate wiring), there is no way to enable a transponder system.
