Solara Problem/Trans Overheating

Solara Problem/Trans Overheating

Postby indiglosolara » Sat Jun 07, 2003 11:42 am

I was wondering.. how can you tell if you have overheated your transmission?? I recently changed my fuilds but i wanna know if it was done correctly and if there is anyways to test this. I trust my local toyota dealership but also sometimes they are known to f**k up things. Im bring in my car this coming Monday to have them look at a bunch of stuff that i have noticed with my solara that has been bugging me

Here comes my list:

1. Sunroof Making Clicking noise when popping it up. ( was suppose to bring it in last week but never got the chance)

2. I hear Miner Clicking when i accelerate like transmission clicks or i don't know if thats how the new VVT-i engine is suppose to be like.

3. Rear Driver side Strut sounds like its loose when driving over a rough road. (already had passenget side replaced for the same problem)

4. When in reverse, I turn the steering wheel clockwise all the way and stoped at that position i hear rattling noise in the engine comparment.
(Still trying to figure out where its coming from)

5. Alternator has been making a lil squekin noise. probably just needs a lil Lub or WD-40.

6. And I need the timing checks. sounds like it my be outta timing. when idle i hear a click click click. like the valves need to be adjusted.

all of these probably and my car is a 2002 SE i-4 with only 28K Miles

Has anyone exper. the same problems that i have listed..??

I hardly eve run the car hard. i stay under 2500RPM when cold. bearly ever floor it. i wonder if i just got a lemon.!! But if anyone has any opinions. and other things i should look for. please REPLY..

Thanks in Advance.

I think you think too much.....(PS your sunroof is aftermarket)

If you really have a doubt, then turn it back in dealer for warranty. (make sure put the wheel back to stock too)

My Sunroof isn't Aftermarket, its Direct from the Dealer. and has the Toyota Genuine Symbols. But for the other stuff im just going to bring it too the dealer to have them check it out. They have Tested the time once and it was out of timing and they fixed that. but that was at 8K. maybe they need to adjust it again. i dunno Ill see what happens.

Normally to check for transmission overheating you check the fluid on the dipstick. If it is dark colored and smells burned, then you have overheated. Compare yours with some fresh fluid or another car you know is good.

Usual reasons to overheat: improper fluid level, abuse such as trailer towing, racing, rocking the car when stuck, or holding the car on a grade by revving the engine, or plugged cooling lines or filter.

Prevention: maintain correct fluid level, don't abuse it, service fluid and filter at recommended intervals, intall an extra transmission cooler.

Kenny, the clicking is normal... unless I also got a lemon

The "loose strut" sound also happened to me. It goes on and off randomly, but I found out it was actually something in the trunk... ever since I cleared out my trunk, the sound has disappeared (about a month now)

which clicking are you talking about.. the sunroof or the engine/tranny????

i took the car in for the strut.. they said i need to bring it in when i have time(like the whole day) cuz they mite need to replace it like they did on my rear right strut... they said the 02-03 had alot of problems with the rear struts from rattlling..

45K is best for a flush. your car doesn't have a trans filter, toyota uses a pickup-screen which doesn't need to be replaced.

The coolers are $50-75 for the basic models. The hardest part would be the install, if you are mechanically inclined, go for it.
