Windshield

Windshield

Postby SammySolara » Sat Jun 14, 2003 7:18 pm

Has anyones Windshield ever been hit by a stone then became chipped and started a line crease? How big was it, and what was the repair price? Also, where could it be fixed? Esp. intrested in price... should insurance be contacted?

It did not happen to my Solara, but rather my friends'. Ironic because it was his Solara that caused me to fall in love with them and buy one.

Back on May 10 of 2003 my windshield was hit with a rock. I was on a 2 lane highway and a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer got off the road and threw up rocks all over my car. One got my windshield in the lower left (drivers side) corner and chipped it. At first it was cracked all the way to the left side (3 inches) and six inches to the right. About a week later it had gone to nine inches to the right.

Had to pay a $100 deductible, but insurance picked up the rest ($200). I was told that if the chip is any bigger than a quarter or if it is cracked at all, it cannot be repaired and you have to get a new windshield. I would do everything possible to get it repaired before getting a new windshield because in my opinion a new windshield install will never be right.

When I got my new windshield they had to tape the molding down all across it so that the caulk would set. When I pulled the tape off the next day I found that the molding had shrunk on the drivers side and did not cover the whole windshield. I had to take it back and have them stretch it down, and it is still not completely flat against the windshield in one place. Supposedly it will flatten out over time, but I'm doubting it. Your friend should definitely check around before getting it done and ask to see and talk to references -- the glass shop I went to had every sort of glass certification there is yet they still f'ed up initially.

Sorry to rant but meant to post about this earlier, hope my $.02 can help someone else :D . I have pics of the chip / crack and replacement windshield and can post pics if wanted.

you can read about what happen here.. http://www.zer0.info/solaraguy/viewtopic.php?p=16417&highlight=#16417

and ever since that happen it has a nasty crack from the middle of the windshield across and then making a right turn down ... and the other side with a right turn up hahah.. i been driving with it like this since dec, i got a quote from Oakland Glass. they said 240 for aftermarket and 260 for ppg.
my deductible is 500$ so it is not worth it to contact my insurance company and pay 500$. wheni can pay for it myself.

where is the chip?
i don't know about the laws where you are, but in NJ if the chip is inside the swipe of the drivers windshield wiper, then a shop legally cannot repair it and it must be replaced.

Better check with your insurance company before you get it replace/repaired. I have no deductible for windshield replacement and my insurance will pay the entire tab. No point in paying out of your pocket if you don't have to.

My windshield is being replaced in the parking lot of my work at this moment :) My deductible was higher than the cost, so I'm just paying. I was quoted between about 240-280 for a new windshield on my 2002. But as they said... not repairable.

Quoted @ 250+
Deductible @ 100 so it's not that bad.

Insurance company suggested Ryan Auto Glass in Pittsburgh (guess it is a local shop) to replace it. They are coming tomorrow and also told me that they will fix the small chip in my 98 Ford Explorer for free. I guess it's a good deal.

What sort of precautions do I need to be aware of with the new windshield? Can I take it in the rain or have the car washed within the days after? How reliable are new "aftermarket" windshields? Will I have leaks or any problems with it? I guess now, I am just worried about the new 'shield.

Don't power wash it for 2 days. As far as leaking most places have a lifetime guarantee so if it starts to leak or anything they will come fix it. Other than that theres not much to it.

Got it replaced yesterday... the new window is great and it even looks to have a tint darker than my original windshield. (Guess that is okay, right?) It's PPG Solargreen. The old originial windshield I had had many dents, smears, lines and marks on it (the old owner didn't take good care of it) so I am very very happy to have a new windshield which I can look out of without any stress at a very low cost and no addition to my insurance.
Thanks to all for advice and help.

update

Postby SammySolara » Mon Jul 07, 2003 2:23 pm

About 3 weeks ago, I encountered a lawn care truck on a local interstate, he kicked up some stones (that I could not see) and within a few seconds my windshield had chipped. By the time I got home (less than a mile away) the chip turned into an 8 inch crack.

Everything is fixed now but

*Has anyone else experienced this in their Solara?
*Everytime I drive on the interstate now, I am afraid that it will happen again. Is it something with the Solara that makes it more common than other types of cars? How common is a windshield crack/chip in a Solara than other vehicles?Does it happen often?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it.

Just some advise folks: when a rock chips a part of your w/shield...just use clear nailpolish and keep it handy whenever you wash your car....it prevents the crack from webbing and spreading!

Thanks for the great advice.... only wish my crack was that simple- it was nearly 8 inches long!
