37 dollar double platinum spark plugs???

went to meineke to get an estimate for my 60k tuneup (toyota is asking $519!! like my poor college student @$$ can afford that), and the guy said that the spark plugs are $37 EACH because toyota uses a double platinum plug that is really expesnive. so with labor and everything, that comes out to about 200 bucks jus to change my spark plugs. i asked him if i could use any other kind, and he said if i use any other kind of spark plug, my car wont run well. is this true? and why does toyota use such expensive plugs then? oh and since im naturally aspirated, do i even need them replaced at 60k, or can i wait til 100k like i read in that other post.

oh and meineke checks your car for free and then gives you an estimate on the service that needs to be done, they spent a good 45 minutes looking at mine. so if you ever get worried and want your car checked out for free, go to them, it cant hurt. theres no obligation for hte service afterwards. and if ur in college like me, FREEE is always GOOOD

$37 each for OE replacements is way too much. I got the OE replacements for around $10 each. Search the forum for info on the Denso Iridium's. They should last for the life of your car and I think you can get a set of 6 for around $85.

yea man i got pretty suspicious, 10-15 bucks each sounds about right...but has anyone even heard of this double platinum bit that meineke told me? oh yea, and i wish i needed 6, but only need 4. i guess thats both a good an bad thing :-?

The 1mz-fe requires double tipped platinum plugs. That's why they are more expensive than a regular Bosch platinum or something that you can get at Autozone for $2.50 ea

They won't last the life of your car but yes you are right. Densos will last 30k miles, NGKs will last 60k

they only come in 6 though. can't hurt to have an extra pair layin' around anyway.

6 for $63.00. not bad IMO.

I got mine from there also, they did have a deal on there for a 4 pack but im not sure if its still going on

I just put in Denso Iridium spark plugs into my car two days ago. It is very nice that you can feel difference! My car runs like new again and the performance is very stable ( i tried bosch +4 before, the difference only last about 60 miles). I think i might use Iridium spark plug for life.....

teh warranty on the denso is 250,000 miles or 10 years. but yanks, u say they needed to be changed every 30k? whats the reason? also i couldnt seem to find the NGKs on the site, how much are they and where can i get them from? thanks

Right from the denso FAQ: "DENSO Iridium Power plugs, with their .4mm center electrode, have been developed for performance applications. Because gradual wear will “round-off” firing points over time, the concentrated firing power and voltage requirement benefits will be reduced. For this reason, DENSO advises replacement after 30,000 miles."

If you get oem replacement IK20 plugs you might be able to extend it a little longer

extend it a little longer compared to what? in other words, what other kind of densos could i get? IK20s are the ones they recommend, but would another type give me better performance?

Bosch +2 for my I4. Seems to work fine. However, I did try the Bosch single-tip ones, and it performs like CRAP. Parts counter @ Kragen said it was alright, until I threw it back at them :evil:

. Of course, the parts counter person I threw it back at was a high school buddy of mine. :lol:

BTW, the Bosch 2's were $2/piece.

Iridium works better because it has better electro conduction. For 5SFE and 1mzFE, non force induction would use IK20. For with force induction, IK22 is recommond (colder range). There is no free power gain, however, it has been dyno proven that it gain some HP. Also, i just found out HKS iridium power is made by Denso, which cost about $25 per piece, but i believe it is same Sh!t as Denso Iridium spark plug, which cost about half of it.

Ok I have question then. Would it be worth buying a set of these even though I do not have a SC. I just preplaced the old ones with Platnium's again. If the Denso are better I would like to know.
